1) unless you’re not in the industry, why is this news to you? It’s been this way since the dawn of time within the legal industry.
2) some (if you ask me, I’d say most) would take the position that 3.5x is little for the hours put in.
Also, paying 2.5 for the second half of TC is insane to me and what’s worse is the fact that this 2.5 is a deliberated amount. The level of exploitation of the industry has reached a new high. Little surprise if there is a shortage of lawyers in the coming years, and the ministry and stakeholders backpaddling this decision.
Although if history were to repeat, the backpaddling would make much of a diff anyw

if you saw the law gazette article on trainee pay it basically says the same thing lol - sudden jump from trainee to nq
if the other site is right and trainee pay has been this way for 17 years then yeah the gap was def smaller back then. just plain exploitation by law firms

Why does the LawSoc even allow for such exploitation of trainees/NQs in the industry? Even other roles in civil sectors are paid higher than a big four NQ (just have a browse through on careers gov website).

Wow according to this article, CPF is only to the base 80% salary, so the 20% is really just fake salary since the bonus will just be the bonus anyways. Can someone help confirm?

Bonus payments attract CPF contribution. Bonus are a component of wages. Anyone with even a rudimentary understanding of the CPF Act knows this.
This is what happens when recruiters start writing rubbish without actually fact checking basic things in their articles. You don't even need to be a lawyer - HR people ought to know this.

Look like they fixed it already. At least they're fast.
I think this is a public service, especially for young lawyers. I remember 50% of conversations as a junior lawyer is just speculating on other law firm salaries. He says she says leading to nowhere.

it's ridiculous - firms should be following Simmons' suit
pay 2.1k for first 6 months ptc, then 8k for second 6 months ptc

In case you’re not being facetious, don’t think that’s fair for a local outfit. To my mind, what’s fair would be legal exec pay for the latter half. After all you’re technically already called to the bar under the new regime. You ought to be able to sign off documents as a member of the bar. At the very least, rendering emails advice.
To be paying such meagre sum is really top level exploitation

Under the new regime, everybody (aspiring practitioners, in-house counsel, legal academics) will be called/admitted as a "Lawyer (Non-Practitioner)"
By definition, in order to practise law, aspiring practitioners would need to get a practising certificate (presumably by completing RLT/PTC components) in order to actually practise law.
If this is the case, what is the point of being called to being called/admitted as a "Lawyer (Non-Practitioner)"?
