Even without considering the crazy hours and pay, I think it is quite normal for some people to feel disillusioned or unhappy about audit after trying it for a couple of years. If unhappy, then time to plan ahead.

Even leaving big4, we will still be able to get a decent income, so no point staying purely for the certainty in promotion.

There are things you can’t replace with money. Not even with 100k/month.

10k will take about 10 year in Big4? If you leave as senior or manager and go out to do compliance, FP&A, accounting roles, you should be able to get 7-10k with 10 years exp too. Potentially more if you climb fast enough.

Audit is ok as a career starter as it trains you to think in a certain manner and work independently, and have certainty in promotion. If you like it, can stay in it. But if you are unhappy, then should consider other options and factors.

You might just find greater job satisfaction and feel great in what you do, better knowledge development, proper respect, a normal working environment outside big4, and a fairly decent pay at the same time. There is a reason why Big4 turnover is high.

I prefer to do accounting in an accounting firm, cause it’s like really accounting accounting.

Rather than do accounting in a pharmaceutical firm, manufacturing firm, oil & gas, or retail business where you are just a support division and not the revenue driver.

At manager level, you are doing more of sales and client relationship management than accounting.

Real accounting accounting is not found in Big4.
