Dear seniors out there,
How was it like when you were doing your training? Did things change for the better/worse after you got qualified?

IS LAW the only way to make money?

Can I make money as a lawyer?

I know this is like going to trigger a lot people but I’m motivated by money but my firm is not paying a lot as trainee and associate.

How can I become partner soon?

Where can I seek help for mental illness and depression?

My boss and work is driving me crazy.

I don't plan to practice law, nor do I envision living in Singapore long term.

I would, however, like to go into arbitration or legal consultancy (either in Singapore or abroad).

Am I just being incredibly silly wasting 3 years doing a JD or do you think it will be a good foundation for going into arbitration or legal consultancy?

Any viewpoints will be helpful

Thank you.

U might be aware already that the views here tend to be from one end of the spectrum - those who are struggling and have been unfortunate with their experience. Take the views here with a dose of scepticism.

My observation of the people in SMU JD is that generally they know what they want and why they accepted the offer.

Can u enter arbi and legal consultancy without spending the three years? Do you have the financial means to give up 3 years of pay + 7x thousand in fees?

It is those who apply and accept on a whim that drop out of the programme shortly after realising they did not think it through well...

Guys, it is not worth it getting mentally ill or suicidal over some d-bag of a boss/partner. Remember at the end of the day that it is only a job.

What's legal consultancy? What's "going into arbitration but not wanting to practice law"?

Do you even know what you're talking about? Sorry to be blunt but you don't have the slightest inkling about what your degree entails, what entry and exit options there are, what you actually want, and what the legal and legal-related industries are.

Very surprising that SMU accepted you.
