RP special, got no tenure, work there is also very tough.
true that it is number 3 now, but that is good only for students, many staff want to resign...
work one day from home is only if you have no class or meeting.. which is never...

but to be fair, this polytechnic in the north has really changed overnight.
from the last ranked polytechnic, it has overtaken its rivals to become number 3 from number 5 in two years.

agree that this "reputable" polytechnic is known for it's high turn-over and 'private sector' culture (part due to the fact that most of it's senior management and most corporate staff come from private sector, or high stress (aka Philip Yeo run) stat boards like EDB, AStar), but the staff are given the option to work from home once a week (you can even find this on their career website) when they have no classes.

I also disagree that polytechnics do not allow each other to poach. I have been a lecturer in 2 polys, and I never had any issue moving over.

this behaviour does not make sense as it undermines the initial concept of privatisation and the creation of stat boards in the 1st place. I have heard the rumour before, and all i can say is that it is just a rumour. If you are good, the other side will take you.

agree, this whole poly to poly checking is a myth. I have known many staff who have moved from SP to TP in the early days, and recently from TP to RP.

more often than not people use it as an excuse when they cannot get the job, but the truth is that moving from one poly to another is very possible, and yes, polytechnics do 'poach' staff. especially the younger ones that can pay better due to more 'enlightened' HRs policies.

Is RP that bad? High turn over?

I'm think of applying for a lecturer post.

Is it advisable for people with 3 years of industry experience (late 20s) to switch to a teaching career in poly? (The requirement for lecturer in that course is 3 years industry exp)

Many people here mentioned that teaching in poly is a retiring career, so is it a job that is not really suitable for young working adults(Or in the first place the poly do not really fancy young people as lecturer)?

I always thought that teaching in poly is only part of your job, as there are times that you can involve in projects related to the industry, as well as research in products etc. So it doesn't really mean that being a poly lecturer you will "lose touch" with the industry outside right?

And i guess it is a PAX6 grade for people with only 3 years of industry experience?

RP as the no. 3 poly. You guys must be kidding! Based on what? You should look at the no. of 1st choice applicants and no. of quality applicants for 2010 and 2011. This is the KPI for informal poly ranking. The ranking looks like this:

1. NP
2. SP
3. TP
4. NYP
5. RP

Yeah business times published an identical ranking. RP was trying to do a SMU with their marketing but only managed to attract students with poorer results.

However, work culture in RP is much better than other polys, I heard.

I always wanted to be a corporate trainer but my present job scope only involves adhoc in-house training and occasional sales presentations to clients. I do have industry experience though and I wonder going through the path of a lecturer will enhance my credentials as a trainer later on. Thanks.
