Will there be off days given for weekend shift? Night shift next day rest day?
Same poster as above. Depends if you are engineer or technical officer. For weekend shift, there is allowance for it, so depending on your team, there might be people fighting to do those shifts. For night shifts, just have to do no choice, but usually get morning off, and go back in the afternoon (again depends on manpower and manager)

Usually during night shifts, what are the things rail e&m engineers typically do?
Manage and oversee contractors (eye power?) Ensuring jobs are done? TIA

100% accurate. No value add whatsoever. Even if you are new, no one will follow to give u guidance. The "senior" engineer that follows you most likely don't know anything as well. Blind leading the blind.

Best part is that when things screw up, I will see the senior kan geong and ask the contractor to explain while they beautify the WhatsApp to send to upper management.

Culture wise quite good. People who are there usually stay on throughout their career since it is stable and quite family friendly since senior managers and colleagues are usually married females with kids.

Progress wise is just a slow grind. And salary is average at best even though rail contract colleagues get MAC which is an additional mth of salary
