may i know what is the rationale for having SB? is NEA a tier 2 SB?

tier 2 SB == CS in terms of remuneration?

Hi guys, pardon me for asking this.

I am about to enlist into army soon and was thinking about signing on. I have experience in school's cadet corp and I really like such kinda lifestyle.
My considerations will be the long term prospect and salary stability. Let's say if I were to sign on as an officer, will I be able to attain a senior officer rank eg;LTC and have about 8k monthly by the time I retire?

If you have a reputable degree and have no screw-ups, you should be able to attain the rank of LTC by the time you retire, and your salary should be around there or more.

Do note that should you at anytime wish to switch, the jump to private or even to any other public agencies will be very hard. The working experience you've accumulated will be considered almost nil, unless you've the rank of at least Major when you wish to jump ship. Even then it's hard to enter any specialist role, but you can try those generalists position.

Stability wise I'm not very sure about it now, as its all on contract basis subject to renewal based on work performance. And it'll be hard to climb up the ranks as there's too many scholars in SAF (even after excluding those overseas merit scholars).

SB is essentially a division within a ministry that has gotten so big, they are branched out to have autonomy on its own. To me personally, the establishment of SB is merely to "feed" those scholars and ensure they have a job to do, yet making it seem important. Granted over the years, there are some SBs that have truly define themselves and make themselves indispensable.

You cannot say tier 2 SB = CS in terms of remuneration. Each SB have their own way to peg their remuneration; some are more generous than CS, some are way below CS. Rather than getting fixated on whether they're tier 1 or 2, it's more important to just compare their remuneration, as well as career development/progression. Culture is another important factor. As a rule of thumb, the better the remuneration, the busier and more hectic your job will be.

army may not be wat u imagine it to be like. Cadet/recruit/trainee life is jus a whole brunch of wayang fest which is unlikely to be wat u do day to day once u r pass that stage.

my suggestion is to try tok to some regulars or observe what they do before u commit urself.... as someone earlier mentioned, once u r inside, it is very hard to get out. Also, unless ur education is really low, do not sign on as specialist if u cant get officer.

i intend to get a degree in the future, maybe part time or something. I was thinking since LTC will have a salary of about 8 to 10k, maybe its good to strive to reach that stage and retire with that all the savings.

I spoke to some regulars like my neighbour and he claimed that signing on as specialists is not attractive as now as times have changed. Of course everyone will want to strive to be an officer, but since the organisation is trying to pull both of them to come together, it's not that bad as a specialist I feel. Just some of my observations and opinion.

I have heard that some senior ones left and joined other industries as smth like management consultants drawing somewhere nearing to their last drawn too. Not that bad too.

Many thanks for sharing. Could you elaborate more on culture as a factor? And how about career progression? I am worried about what happens if i hit max and still not promoted to the next salary band
