Thanks so much for the advice... It definitely clears those cloud on my head...
I can identify with how much you just want to be assessed fairly... but the sooner we accept that there will be no perfect fairness, the more contented and self assured we will be. Sometimes I tell myself that I'm glad I'm taking a longer route because I'm learning new things and building up my experiences. It's better to get up slowly but pple say this person has substance than to get up there and pple know this is an incompetent boss.

In civil service, tere are alot of specialists who are incompetent or horrible managers risin to the top very fast... They are neither apathetic towards their staff...and doesn't cr much abt their staff progression... It is true that it is impt to build up substance rather than b termed incompetent...but sometimes the route to wat u deserved might 10x way longer than wat u tot...

Hi forumers,

I have just finished my Master in International Business From Monash University (Australian Uni), I also have a Bachelors of Business Admin fro University of Canberra (Aust Uni as well)
I am considering joining the Ministry of Trade and Industry as a Senior/Assistant Director (Strategist, Futures Group) in the Futures & Strategy Div. Would any kind soul roughly tell me what pay scale to expect. I previously have 7 yrs experience in FMCG as a business development executive and this would be a mid career change. I would welcome any thoughts. Thanks!

In case it matters, my GPA for my masters degree is 3.63/4 so results wise should be ok right?

That position has been open for the longest time - unfortunately if you're not top brains your chance is very slim. On the other hand, how many non-scholar top brains (read-you'll be forever stuck below the scholars) would want to slog in the civil service?

Unless u are lookin for work life balance... Else dun bother joinin civil svc... We've a number of ex bank VPs and SVPs joinin the CS as Snr AD and DD respectively...they suffered a huge amount of pay cut by crossing over, however they are looking for work life balance...if u r not, just go out to earn all u can...my 2 cents worth...

the perception i have regarding govt and private is that govt have better work life balance while private give u the opportunity to potentially earn much higher amount.

but how likely izzit for a person in private sector to earn more (atleast enough to justify the more hectic work condition) than a civil servant?
Im a prospective graduate (non-scholar,expecting good hons) and is very worried that if i venture into the private sector i might find myself doing much worse a few years later and only realize than that not many ppl in private are actually better off.

so my question to current civil servants... how r u doing among ur peers of similar qualification and age in the private sector? I would appreciate it if u could state ur highest qualification too.

it takes around 4 years to complete a PhD. Add another 2 years of post-doctoral experience (as mentioned in the previous post), that would come up to 6 years. It is indeed realistic to hit 6k in 6 years, in today's economic climate.
