Name the firm please so others can avoid wasting time applying to that firm.

any tips from seniors pls, would really appreciate. been overthinking this quite a bit to the point of slight anxiety and insomnia, but most likely just nerves and excitement haha
My first day was chill. Admin stuff like a tour, some IT introduction, etc. - it’ll fill up most of your first day. The rest of your first week will have some onboarding too. After your first day, work will slowly start trickling in. Don’t be scared if your first week or two goes slow. **** will hit the fan when you’re about a month in and by month 2 or 3 you’ll be pulling the **** hours that everyone does.

Try to make as many friends as possible - seniors, batch mates, whatever. They will be your support system.

Hi! OP here. Thank you and the other poster above for sharing a little about what to expect, it definitely makes me feel better. Will try to prep a little by reading through some Practical Law guides to understand the process, but I understand you learn most things on the job.

Cheers all, and atb to those starting their first days as well!

Default Advice

Following from the above post, I'd like to start a thread as well.

Seniors, do you have any advice for those starting their RLT/TCs?

In other words, what do you now know that you wish you'd knew?

A few pointers from a lao jiao who remembers how painful it can be to be a junior. Not the most zai in my batch (not even close) but surviving. I'm a corporate / transactional lawyer so this might not be applicable to you if you intend to be a disputes lawyer.

- Most things you've learnt in law school are useless. It's useful background knowledge at most.

- Be as meticulous as possible. Seniors are counting on you to be their safety net. Yes it's a little unfair but that's unfortunately how it works.

- Know your role as a lawyer - it's not just to recite / apply the law. The law is just one of the tools that are at our disposal to achieve the client's objective.

- Read widely. Understand the context of the matter as much as you can (e.g. what does the client want to do, and why?). Often times I got "lost in the sauce" because I didn't understand the objective of the work well - the work came back less-than-satisfactory. Understanding the matter will inform your work.

- Expect to get your work torn apart. Expect setbacks and scoldings. These are just part and parcel of the learning process. You can feel bad but don't feel sorry for yourself. The best thing you can do is to bounce back and learn as much as you can from your mistakes.

- No one is expecting you to be brilliant or get everything from day 1 (those who do are ****ing crazy). But what they expect from you is enthusiasm, good attitude, and to try to be at least a little hardworking.

- I like to tell my juniors to be like a duck - in 2 ways. One, setbacks should roll off you like water off a duck's back. Two, paddle really hard underwater and stay cool on the surface. Not always practical advice... But I suppose it's aspirational.

- Try to find outlets for your stress. These will save your life.

- Therapy is not taboo.

These are some just to start...

IMO it was a bit hard to absorb material without having the task staring me in the face. In other words, it was easier for me to absorb the material when I had the context. But yes, generally, reading around the subject will go a long long way. Jiayou~

Now with additional barriers along the way like 1 year TC, not to mention other money sucking initiatives like Bar course fees, and exploitative internships. And stinky firms that took on trainees without pay and having the managing partner go on national press embarrassingly and tried pass it off as 'doing national service.' (iykyk)

Is it any wonder why the profession spits out jaded husks of ex lawyers when all is said and done?
Salaries are depressed partially due to cheaper legal executives from Malaysia

Maybe Rajah since they just hired Milbank’s asian head of asset financing.
