depends on what u are applying for, i dont think got specific requirements in general, for snr roles need relevant experience. need to know how to write well, can present urself concisely during interview, should have good chance one.

I am a career civil servant (in Ministry since grad from NUS) and am in a generalist role that has no relation to my degree (mechanical engineering). Am wondering whether there are anyone like me who have regretted starting off in civil service and feeling 'stuck' especially in terms of pay... I have tried on a few occasions to apply for private sector job (including stat boards actually, for the higher pay) but it is always resume sink into the sea and have no response. not very keen to move across ministries as the pay is likely to be the same under movement policy.
I see quite a few friends and cohort mates from my mech engin days doing well in oil and offshore and being able to go on overseas job and making much more (not just in salary/pay but also intangible benefits like housing/car allowance when overseas) and I do feel abit regret that I could have had the chance too, but chose 'stability'... then now got family and all, look at the MX pay and wonder about the what ifs

But if you look at how prices are rising across all necessities ( coe/car is not a necessity to me) then I think there's value to wonder how comfortable / early you can stop working

I don't think this is uncommon? Younger gens start off and higher base pay now also. 140k annual would translate into about 8k which seems decent for age 40
