There is no need to be ashamed. There are many families who earn lesser than yours. A combined family income of $170k pa is pretty decent. You are lucky that you live in a well run country which has appreciated your asset. Your property can be sold at $1m. You are so lucky compared to people in our neighboring countries.

You are better morally compared to the many rich men who womanize. These men have weak wives who close one eye of their rich husband's infidelity. These useless money minded women.

I hope to retire in Malaysia. When I reach 65, I will sell my flat for S$1m which will give me RM2.5m to retire with. Even though I am poor, I'm proud that I don't womanize. There are men who are rich but they womanize, some of them could be in this forum.

You totally missed his point. He was ashamed because he earned only $70k pa much less than his wife who earned $100k pa. $70k pa including 13th month and 2 months bonus means his monthly pay is only $4.7k.

And please don't compare with people living in other countries, as it is really not relevant. We live here, so we should base on the cost of living here. For example You cannot tell a cleaner earning $1k pm who is struggling to feed his family here to compare with people living in Nigeria. It is makes no difference to him and his family. He still doesn't feel rich and will still struggle to pay the bills and bring food to the table.

My wife and I are happily retired in JB. We live in our nice JB house and rent out our fully paid up 5 room HDB flat. We get $3,000 (RM7,500) every month from our flat rental. We spend only RM4,000 per month. We are in our mid fifties. Life is good, thanks to our investment in our HDB flat (now worth $700k). Our HDB flat is our precious asset which will continue to appreciate.

Smile be happy

Yes easy living in Singapore, HDB has appreciated to 700k, no repayments from a combined income 120K per annum. Condo never lived in paid for by the tenants. Next when the kids get married we rent our HDB and move in to the kids HDB, and we can travel and enjoy the life with multiple sources of income. What other purpose can there be except to be happy?

Yes indeed. Our asset appreciation policy has worked well. Our HDB flat is meant to be our retirement asset as cash savings alone is not sufficient. Also good to have children as we can move in with them so that we can rent out our HDB flat. We must also support more FTs working in Singapore so that they can rent our flats. We should increase the ABSD higher for PRs buying condo so that they will not buy but instead rent our empty condos. Maybe increase to 30% or 40% ABSD.

My condo has also appreciated from $800k in 2006 to $1.4m today. I hope it will go up to $2m by the time I retire in 5 years time. I will then rent it out and live in my kid's penthouse. I will help to take care of my cute grandchildren. I will give the condo to my son when I die. Win-win for all.

When our kids got married and moved out, we decided to downgrade from our landed home to a HDB flat. We sold our house at $1.7m and bought a $400k renovated HDB resale flat. We invested the balance $1.3m in blue chip stocks, earning $65k pa. Our kids give us $1k per month in total ($12k pa), so our passive income in total is $77k pa. We spend $50k pa and save the rest. We manage to retire comfortably in our 60s.

I guess I am alot luckier. Currently 38 yrs old I earn about $200K pa. My wife who is 2 years younger earns about $150K. We bought a freehold landed property for $2.5M last year. We hope that we can sell it next time and retire with the money from it.
