You totally missed his point. He was ashamed because he earned only $70k pa much less than his wife who earned $100k pa. $70k pa including 13th month and 2 months bonus means his monthly pay is only $4.7k.
And please don't compare with people living in other countries, as it is really not relevant. We live here, so we should base on the cost of living here. For example You cannot tell a cleaner earning $1k pm who is struggling to feed his family here to compare with people living in Nigeria. It is makes no difference to him and his family. He still doesn't feel rich and will still struggle to pay the bills and bring food to the table.
