Am I correct to say that on average, a hospital specialist consultant can earn twice that of a family physician/gp in the public sector? If that is the case, why is fam med so popular?

Sometimes money isn't the be-all and end-all of life. With FM, there is less office/hospital politics, less unpaid administrative work, more control over personal schedule (with the ability to cut back) and lack of call responsibilities.

Hmm, it would probably be roughly 240k (+/- 10-15k) per annum in all including of all bonuses, assuming average performer ie. B grade and some other variable components.

Are you sure there is less politics/administrative work in polyclinic and community hospital as compared to acute hospital?

No the average doctor is average
They dont really come early enough and leave home late
To be a doctor you should sacrifice your personal time and life to get a good appraisals
Your effort will show

Basically.....
"Good performing" Doctor dedicates his ENTIRE LIFE AND ALL HIS 24h a day 7 days a week to work and research writing papers for his work/boss.
I remember I had one guy work very hard want to get "A" grade.
He did not. And he was pissed cos he really spent all his time working and slogging away for the department.
Explanation was that year was 2007 bad economy nobody could get A.
He was down hearted. I said why so important need to get A?
He said bonus!
I said so between your B and the A what is the difference in amount of bonus?
He said around 4-5k.
I asked him 4-5k can go buy what? A condo? A house? A car?
He said go holiday.
Joker lah. I told him I make more money than 4-5k just investing my savings in bank stock with dividends.
