What are you taking about? There're clearly some from Singapore that were promoted, 1 partner and a couple of counsels I believe

That's because, until recently, CC and Baker were the only firms in Singapore among the international firm community that had graduate TC programmes. Aside from those two, Latham and A&O traditionally took on UK grads, but they now open up to local and other minlaw-approved universities recently.

Local grads are so fixated on these firms that they complete overlook other international law firms that have been implementing new TC schemes these past couple of years, including many FLA firms. There is a misconception that FLA firms are not "truly international".

Aside from a few FLA firms that are not truly international (DRD and HL), most of the international firms that have set up in Singapore are legitimate int'l firms that compete with the Big 4/Baker/other international firms in the country. Some of them have, since around 2018ish, started implementing E&W TCs (Ashurst, HSF, NRF, Sidley, Simmons).

Obviously students in the UK have more options that those in Singapore, but the chances of getting a TC there are much harder than in Singapore (see CC Career's latest video on : 1/28 chance, i.e. 3.5%, of getting a TC with an applicant pool of 5000+ candidates).

For the other international firms that you mentioned, e.g. Gibson, W&C, Milbank, etc., they traditionally only hire from A&G/WongP/other international law firms and perhaps some star individuals from the mid-tier firms. So, locals don't really know too much about them and tend not to discuss applying for those firms because there's no graduate TC programme for now. And also because they don't really know what to talk about, or how to go about applying for them, because ppl who really lateral there are so good that they're too busy to peruse and come onto these forums (presumably).

But yeah, agreed that local grads are myopic on the CC and Bakers front

I think it’s because CC and BM are the big international firms with the most orthodox TC route that is comparable to B4, as compared to the other international firms. Coupled with the sheep mentality that is a byproduct of the Singapore education, local grads unsurprisingly flock to CC and BM and view them as the two be all end all firms. This is not to say CC and BM are lacking as compared to the other international firms tho, I think each have their own pros and cons as with most things in life.

The newly promoted Singapore office partner you're referring to, is about as Singaporean as I am Israeli.

Actually most firms quite jialat. The 5-15 pqe range is practically non-existent.

Which is a sure sign that the firm has problems.

Good news is that if you can tahan the grind, you will be guaranteed made a junior partner unless you're totally cmi.

Bad news is that doesn't bode well for the profession. Firms and law soc are doing nothing to address the hollowing out of the middle category, which is a long recognised problem. Only lip service. The fundamental sweatshop conditions of local firms even the Big 4 has not changed. Only short sighted practices of churning through a large amount of juniors.

An experienced junior partner or senior associate is very valuable. They have good prospects of going to a good inhouse role or better compensation in international firms.

Based on 2021-2022 appointments, JPs in big4 start between 15.5k - 17k.

hi y'all, heard there were some adjustments in the legal industry salary recently. any idea how much the NQ/1PQE salaries are as of now (2022/23 region)?

For both b4 and bigger mid-sized firms.
