There are many paths in the Patents field.

You don't actually need a law degree to be a patent attorney (under the Singapore regime, formally called a "registered patent agent").

In fact, an LLB will only be a distraction. If you want to do hard science IP and patents prosecution, just go for a full fledged science background, up to advanced Masters or PhD lvl. You'll then need to take the Grad Dip IP (old GCIP) course which will teach you all you need to know about IP law, and pass the Patent Agent Qualifying Exams. Then you can be registered after training.

The value proposition of a lawyer who is also a registered patent agent is that you're supposedly the "bridge" between the more technical science-background PAs, and the "lawyer" side of the value chain. But if your interest lies more in science, just ditch the LLB part entirely and don't waste time with a Double Degree, cos you'll prolly be locked out of MSc or MEng degrees due to lack of depth.

If you want to be a scientist working in the patents field, get a PhD in whatever scientific track interests you and don't bother about the patent agent track. You can get a patent scientist job at an IP firm doing pure patent drafting, and leave the prosecutions part to the lawyers-cum-registered agents.

If you just want to be a vanilla IP lawyer, then take the LLB and all the various IP modules but chances are you aren't going to have much value without a hard science background

Genuinely intrigued by all this shade being thrown at foreign unis (and the fact that only oxbridge and ivy league appeared to be spared). Why does everyone in Sgp seem to think NUS law is the gold standard? Doubt most ppl attending KCL even know NUS exists but the converse clearly isn't true.

Fact is, if you want a job at any of the highest paying/largest/MC/WS intl firms, you're more likely to get them with a KCL degree than an NUS degree - no one in the industry outside of Singapore really cares about (perceived) academic rigour...

From another London uni so probs will get judged by y'all too but am at one of the highest paying NY WS firms in London can truthfully say i couldn't care less.

V up and down and based on department so experiences vary. K&E commonly thought to the be worse but query how much of that is just rumour/generalisations. Expect at least 1700 annualised and above, but I've done 50% of that in the last 3 months and then billed just 20 hours this week (I'm in leveraged finance). Some peeps in the restructuring team have gone over 3000 hours during Covid and those in tax/IP/reg might do around 1500. We all get paid the same at junior levels though so don't buy into the glamour/prestige **** and think corporate/M&A is where its all at. Do what you like and not what others think is cool.

What that also means is that hours in a US firm isn't too far from MC (in London at least) and likely better than Singapore.

More to the point - don't wear your hours like a badge of honour. Beasting 3ams every day doesn't make you better than anyone else and looking down on those that do (or want) 9-5s basically helps your bosses justify working you to the bone. No shame in looking for work life balance and hopefully your firm thinks the same too.

Whole life brainwashed by govt, parents and friends to get good grades and fit into the mould. NUS/NTU is the be all and end all. Basically, frogs in an extremely small well.

Be glad most of the society are filled with people like this and the fact that they will never change. Your growth outside of SG will not be hindered and you’ll get the best of both worlds.

Lol what's happening nobody was even saying anything about foreign unis and suddenly this guy comes in here and starts faking a conversation between himself. "Long time no see" when both accounts are Unregistered LOL

You just demonstrated that KCL is better than NUS at least in having an inferiority complex LOL
