You are right. Readiness is a subjective thing but there are certain aspects that people look at to see if you are ready for the next level. For example, are you already leading a team or providing some form of mentorship to junior analysts? Do you have the leadership skills to lead a team or to put in place work processes for your team?
If he isn’t the kind that is already doing such things, then he is really not ready.
What’s important is for him to find out what he needs to go to get there and assess if it’s easier to get a job elsewhere or stay.
