at my age (late 30s) some jobs like signing on army are out of the question although i would kill my own mother for the opportunity

since its coming to a year of unemployment, if you were in my shoes, would you:

a) take an engineering or IT degree from any of the pte unis (since i have 'wasted' my chance on an fass degree)

b) continue applying for jobs and hope for a miracle

c) join the blue collar workforce (eg. lorry driver)

I am a history grad too. Graduated 10 years after you. The degree isn't useless though it isn't useful. Find a contract job, and then upskill yourself. Like what others have said, employers value a diverse range of skillsets.

I get how you feel. In my current job and there is already conflict with my supervisor. It got so bad that im dreading work even though I am working from home. Have you tried approaching your higher ups to request for a transfer or something, in your previous job?

By the way, how many applications have you sent out? I have sent 150+ applications within the last 2 months and no replies thus far. A butt-ton of rejections though.

Well, there are quotas set in place to have a minimum number of local workers in a coy if they want to hire foreigners, and I think most employers want to be able to physically interact with their employees at least once in a while even if WFH becomes the norm (unlikely btw). Combine these 2 factors = more likely than not most coys will still prefer to import the FT they want into SG. There are exceptions like call centers and whatnot though.

Safest from this is still jobs in the public sector lor. Don't think I need to explain why, right?

Would you like me to have a look at your CV for you? Sending out 150+ application sounds like you might be doing it wrong or sending it to the wrong people though. Care to give us more context here? Happy to help!

So easy to bypass the local hire quota. Just engage these foreign workers as independent contractors. Then they won't be considered a hired staff, but just an external contractor contracted to provide certain services. Best thing is by telecommuting, they don't even need what ever workpass or visa as well as related expenses to be in SG to work.

Available jobs will shrink if many companies successfully pull this off. Competition will then go through the roof!

Hi All! Quick introduction, I've been in the recruitment field for the past 10 years in SEA. Having been a key decision maker in the hiring process at both corporates and startup businesses, I do have a good idea of what companies look for in candidates. However, there seems to be a big gap between what job applicants think they need to do to land the role vs what companies are looking for.

Curious to hear, what are some of your obstacles and stuck points in your job search?

Companies want candidates who have very specific experience in certain areas. But to get the experience, one will need a role where they can pick up such experience. Everyone wants to hire someone who can hit the ground running, but no one wants to train. It's a chicken and egg problem.

Thanks for replying! I hear you, frustrating from an applican't view.

Can you give me an exact example? Would this be say applying for manager role in a certain company with a specialised expertise vs something more general?

Also perhaps I should start a thread for this vs riding on OP's topic!

I had quite a number of friends who had their internship offers rescinded.... we live in incredible times. Initially it was pretty difficult for me to get one. I'm thankful that I was one of the few that clinched an internship and it was thanks to these guys (matchub.co) that I am where I am today. I heard of it through a university friend who recommended it to me and signed up with them, never thought i could get an internship during such times. Would recommend for y'all to check it out cos it helped me clinch an internship position. I'm gna share the link w y'all: (matchub.co/index.php/register/) Hope this helps for anyone that is looking for an internship!
