banking has more chio bu's. gahmen got old grumpy aunties. take your pick.

the "volatility" is exaggerated. the last major retrenchment was a long long time ago. with a perpetually booming housing market in Singapore, all banks here will prosper just on giving out housing loans alone. there will never be a retrenchment exercise again. ever.

Yea all this volatility crap talk is not seeing things in perspective. In average banks pay 3 - 4 times the pay of other jobs, even if you end up getting retrenched and spend 75% time unemployed, the total pay will still be the same as a engineer or executive working 100% time.

Default An illusion that banking sector is not volatile

This month, two banks have retrenched its staff. One of them is doing it worldwide (a quick check on the internet will tell you which bank it is). The other bank is pulling its back and middle office out of Singapore (this is a smaller bank but those keeping in touch with business news will know).

All the indicators about the financial services show that its contracting.

I'm not saying that financial and banking sector is not lucrative. Some banks are expanding, yesterday a headhunter called me for a position in the sector. But my point is that one should evaluate the ups and downs of the industry carefully using concrete data and reasons.

I can't help but emphasize that sweeping hearsays from others (including the naysayers) do not assist but muddle the picture.

Bottom line: banks pay very well and it has _some_ volatility in terms of getting retrenched. Overall still an extremely lucrative sector to be in.

Much better than engineering any day (which suffers from WORSE volatility -- fact)

Bottom line is simple, banks have a slightly higher chance of retrench but a enormously higher pay package. Banks are the place to go for those who want to make it big.

The fact is every sinkie is trying to get into a bank, facts are louder than opinions. Most naysayers are just sour grape because they know they cant get into a bank.

To choose to work in a bank is a no brainer! Just picture the following:

1. Fat pay cheque
2. Swanky downtown office for workplace
3. Dress in slick business wear
4. Work alongside young nubile chiobus

Which other careers offer you all these??????????????????
