Because the high ranking civil servants (directors, senior managers...etc) is reserved for the scholars either within the ministries or from other ministries, or they are looking for someone with qualifications from the best uni, not local uni.

They usually do organic promotion and take in the mid level executives or fresh grads, they will never recruit anyone with normal degree and pay them 8k to do a directorial role, whether u r a top salesmen or a banker... To them either u have a gd degree or u dont.

I think for u to go to nus, ur a levels not that bad lah... Dont apply the elites ministries/stat boards, they tend to be more selective and critical... Avoid MinLaw, MTI, EDB, MOF... Etc unless of course u have really good experience (i.e Directorial positions)
You are lucky, still can get called up for interview. I guess they already have many of their existing staff, holding private degree from unisim etc, don't even get a chance for interview to place them in graduate scheme. I guess many with degree but are working in non graduate position.

Unisim is a local degree, awarded locally and it is RECOGNIZED, govt also award 55% subsidies for working adults taking up unsim courses. Many are emplaced after their studies in unisim. Do u think unisim grads need to work in non grad positions? Really? This is very irresponsible remark. Govt bodies are also starting to recognize SOME distance learning deg like Monash, UOL and RMIT, though i REPEAT NOT ALL hor... Some Hr and hiring managers look at work experience (and salary expectations), some look at degree, it depends on the HR who will decide whom she wan to shortlist for interviews.

I worked at this elite ministry many years back (6years ago, was a diploma holder and was doing my studies at unisim), this Hr Manager from EDB will extract all resumes from local degrees only and even look at the number of jobs u applied in careers@gov to see how genuinely interested u r with the roles u applied for. She only consider the local uni (unisim excluded) and those with better grades, not just the honors awarded. To be honest, she was a scholar, an irritating one, i didnt agree with what she did, but of course i kept quiet and did what i was told.
She ever told othet colleagues (local grads and scholars) right before my face that she doesnt knw why pple will 'try so hard' to get a degree from (unisim and other private instituitions) when they are not recognized. I was furious because these comments are shortsighted and narrow minded.

Today i must say, many Hr depts are more open minded and more accepting. Of course there are the so call 'elite' ministries that makes unthinkable decisions lost touch with the grounds and still functioning fine. I despite pple like that that so i left that elite ministry.

Even my last year, one an only rating 4 had a much bigger bonus.

2014 was a very tough year, really put in hours and work! Now seeing this, really give up liao! Work so hard and finally got whip!!

Smile Performance bonus for contract position

Hi all,
My friend told me that she as a fresh grad from local uni with good honours was offered a 1 year contract position at one of the statboard.
Apparently, there is no performance bonus to be expected during the 1 year contract. Anyone can validate this?

Secondly, you have quite a decent pay in the private sector. You would be around 34-35 years now. The ministry/stat board generally looks at the basic or the gross pay when deciding on the pay package for a prospective candidate. What is your basic/gross salary per month (exclude the bonuses, OTs etc.) ?
Thank you for the advice.

I'm 35 this year. I also gathered that my results were too mediocre for their consideration.

8k is my gross, excluding bonus. No OT.

This was what my friend told me too.

He said those DD and above are usually scholars. If not, they have been in the service for many years and will stay on too.

Rarely do they employ private candidates into these positions unless you are really a 100% match to what they are looking for and there is no one in line for the position.

He said those adv online for DD and above position are for those within the CS/PS to apply. Outsiders totally no case. He asked me to give up hope.

Any truth in what my friend said?

what's your annual package? civil service gives quite good bonuses, so have to look at annual rather than monthly gross.
