I've heard abt this - an officer cannot get a B grade for performance in the year following his/her promotion. But this is really just a myth. I got promoted in Apr 2012 and I got B grade. And it's the same for my colleague too.

Is it easy to enter Civil Service? I've applied several times before but failed to even get called up for interview. And their employment application forms seems to want to know everything about you, even how well you did for PSLE (-_-)"'
I sometimes wish this thread about civil service salary would stop. Just take a look at how some of our fellow Singaporeans are performing. At age 30 years old, he is still earning $2.8K and do you think that he is the only one with that salary here? There are many others who are the same age or older who are earning that range of salary.

Civil/ public service is really about serving the public. Do you know that public servants used to sign off as "Yours sincerely" when writing to the public. It had a lot of meaning to it. Did you join the civil/public sector just because of the healthy MIs or to serve? Do you know that some grads are earning less than $4K in their 40s and they are our fellow Singaporeans with family?

Have you guys read today's news? It was reported that from year 2000, the income gap had begun to widen. Do you know that there is a wage stagnation for those in the private sector right now?

Come on la.. what would i gain from 'misleading' people? I gain more from telling the truth because my intention is to get a feel from others on how am i doing.

c'mon, i kid you not. it depends on which ministry you're from. in the recent promotion exercise in March, there are at least 3 over where i am who made this jump. i'm honestly, really, not kidding you nor do i meant to hoodwink anyone. i have nothing to gain from this if i say sth untrue.

Default the public service is an unique career option

I am sorry but I do not know what to infer from your statement. Anyway the public service is an unique career option that allows the incumbent to tackle issues at a broader level to contribute to our society.

As for any other career opportunities, if one were to just look purely at the compensation package and does not feel for that career, it will be difficult to sustain your walk along that path for long. It is not just about the merit increments please.

You and your blatant ignorance is a great fit for the civil service. Just stay in line and bow to the powers and you can serve your public.

Default The public service has a structured compensation system

I also concur with Kindaichi's views that the average salary for an 2nd upper (with NS) is roughly around $4k (+/- $200) at around the age of 30. It is rare for someone that earn about $5K at that age. A rarity but not an impossibility.

The public service has a structured compensation system that takes into consideration several factors before making the offer. The compensation package is competitive but not extravagant, because ultimately it is the public service.

I apologised if I have agitated you but I do not think that I presented myself as ignorant in any way when I wrote that statement. Anyone with a sound and proper mind would agree with what I wrote. It is purely commonsense.

A sustainable career depends a lot on yourself, not on the merit increments. Your hope, aspiration and what you hope to achieve at the end of your life. If one aspires to serve the public then a public service career would naturally be the optimal choice. Likewise, if one aspires to be a film director then a filming career would be the best choice. Would you rather prefer an high-flying investment banking super-duper paycheck career even though it could consume your life, social circle, health and totally is a mis-align with what you want to be?

Since you are so adamant, please disclose which ministry this is. This is the only way to make the claim credible. Otherwise, it is nothing more than a dubious remark.
