I guess the economist scheme, cause they are one of the most anal schemes that require a specialised degree - and you hinted Social Science. Haha!

Lol. Nice. Good that you got a sponsored degree without the bonds. Congrats on that - that freedom!

A meritocratic institution like the public service strives to choose the best candidates based on his/her abilities. These pool of candidates tend to come from the 'best' universities -- largely meaning NUS/NTU/SMU. (After all, education continues to be the best way of showcasing one's abilities, especially for those w/o prior experience.) Of course, there can be exceptions and hence admission into service is not based solely on academic results or one's university. Otherwise, no need for interviews and entrant tests.
This thread has been rather informative for me when i was considering taking up an offer one of the SBs last month, so i’d like to just share my personal experience if it helps anyone. Some background info about myself, 25 turning on 26 this year, i’m an economics & finance from SIM-RMIT (Distinction, because we don’t have an honors program) + 2 years of NS.

I first started out as a third party temp staff (Asst Exec) for diploma holders in May 2018. Was hired based on my diploma for $2800. The temp rates for my SB was pretty standard, 2.8 for diploma holders and 3.5 for bachelor holders.

So fast forward one year and when the headcount freeze was eased, my RO pushed for me to apply for the Asst Manager role (Grade 6). Granted that i had two other pending offers along with the SB verbal offer, i was struggling to hang on to both offers until i get the salary package.

The grade 6 package i was offered was from $3,200-$5,760. And the salary offered was somewhere right smack in the middle of that range. I did check with HR if there was a distinction between private and local university applicants, he only said no (subjected to be taken with a pinch of salt). But overall, since i only had one year of experience which i wasn’t sure if it was considered given that the job scope will be vastly difference, the salary was calculated based on your NS, any leadership roles in NS and your degree.

P.S. I still had to go through 2-3 rounds of internal interviews has the temp to perm conversions is no different from everyone else who applied on career@gov, i had to apply through that site too, it’s just that the process was expedited in my case.

So to all the private and local universities student our there, my word of advice will really take your degree as a stepping stone to just secure your interview. After securing the interview/job, nobody is actually bothered about your degree pedigree. Your soft and technical skills will be more important. So for fellow private uni students out there, don’t give up and all best! For the local U students, it’s probably already a lot easier for you guys to secure interviews, so don’t give up either!

NTU Social Science has economics and psychology. So it was a random guess and it was wrong too.

I misread the reply.

Cause they only take in people with economics degree (at least a second-upper), and I read in earlier pages that to score an interview, you will have to 'pass' a qualifying test. Stage zero is that the director screens your CV to see if you qualify for the qualifying test. Tough days. But i heard they pay well as a specialised service.

MFA is tough too.
