Wrong. Sonetimes they are paid more. All things equal, a big company would want to compensate the contract staff more cos he doesn't receive other benefits. In countries like UK there are bank front office professionals who prefer to work in contract positions.

When a potential employer determines a candidate's salary, will he only take the basic pay into consideration or fixed allowances as well?

For eg. A bank ops analyst who works the London shift gets $3k basic and $1k fixed allowance per mth and receives 5 mths bonus for the year.

When he subsequently interviews with another bank to do normal hours (9-6pm type), will the new employer consider the candidate's last drawn as $4k and offer him a pay above $4k, or will the employer ignore the $1k allowance and offer the candidate a % above $3k?

HR will not take the 5 mths bonus into consideration rite? Since it's variable and not a sales position.

Any experts to share?

You should consider current your annual salary package(including stock option if any) when asking for new salary.

base on your info, your current annual salary = 3000 x (12 + 5) + (1000 x 12) = $63000/ annum.

1. you should ask your new company that you want to join who many months of bonus on average are they giving out per year. Let say they only give 3 months.

2. if they only give 3 months bonus mean annual package = 15 months salary

3. use your current annual salary / 15 = $4200/month, mean you have to have a basic salary of $4200/mth in order to be on par with your current annual salary, provided you dun intend to increase your annual salary upon jumping ship.

4. if you intend to increase your basic pay when you jump ship, let say by 10%, then you should as for $4200 x 1.1 = $4620/mth as your basic. Mean your new annual salary = 4620 x 15 = $69300

Hi thanks for the advice. Are u a HR practitioner or recruitment consultant?

From my personal experience though, potential employers normally ignore the bonuses you draw becos it's unpredictable. For eg. if one received 7 months bonuses at Kep Corp and that engineer applies for the next job, i doubt the next employer will divide out the 7 mths bonus and incorporate into the new basic salary.

Or maybe there are different standards/practices among different companies in Sg..?

I am wondering much can a financial analyst (in IT manufacturing MNC) with 3 yrs of experience earn (total package per annum)? Is $45k per annum too much to ask for?

I'm not in HR but just speaking fr my experience, last drawn basic salary will be considered but variable bonus usually not, because each company has its own way of calculating bonus and evaluating performance. But if you do meet a generous employer, it is possible that they may pay you a slightly higher basic salary to "compensate" you if your last drawn annual package is higher than what they offer. My 2 cents.

From my opinion, I think when Mr A jump ship from company X to company Y, His new annual salary in Y should at least match his annual salary when he was in X or even higher. Normally I would request for a 20% increment of annual salary upon jumping ship.

We should see the annual total package which inclusive of (12mths basic pay + AWS + bonus + stock option if any + annual leaves)

I don't believe in just solely increment on the basic salary only, it is not a good deal.

Eg
Mr A, basic salary = $2800/mth, Bonus = 9 mths inclusive AWS, >>Annual salary = 2800 x 21 = 58800

Mr B, basic salary = $3700/mth, Bonus = 3.9 mths inclusive AWS, >>Annual salary = 3700 x 15.9 = 58830

Note that both Mr A & Mr B earn about the same annual salary of about $58800.

But when both request for 20% increment on their basic salary when jumping ship, Mr A will be at a disadvantage due to his lower basic. Mr A $2800>>$3360, Mr B $3700>>$4440

It would be fairer to both if we only consider their annual salary for the 20% increment,
Mr A $58800>>$70560
Mr B $58830>>$70596

Other case take Mr A as eg,
Basic = 2800
Annual = 58800

he jump ship to another company that ofter him 30% increment in his basic salary = $3640
But his company only pay him AWS + 2 mth bonus = annual = 15 x 3640 = 54600
Means that, even he got a 30% increment to his basic salary, he still earn $4200 lesser in term of his annual salary. Judge for yourself is this good?

That why I insist only consider the annual package for increment, where you really increase your pay for the whole year!!!
