Yes, it is quite common actually. Reference checks are mostly conducted through your previous supervisors. Purpose is to assess your character / competency / suitability for the role

I would suggest that you give them a call next week. It is ok to call them to enquire about your progress

That's too bad for you man, you need to understand the hierarchy, us(Ivy league/Oxbridge)> local u > SIM

Only when we choose to forfeit the position, you bottom feeders will get it

Could this possible result in a longer processing time for HR to get back?

Yes definitely. Personally it took about a week for me but that was because 1) my references responded fairly quickly & 2) the HR in my ministry was quite efficient.

Unless you performed badly or left a deep impression in your previous roles, you should be fine.

Adding on to the above, I would advise you to inform your previous supervisors so that they can be prepared

Yup LTA is like this - had a bad experience w LTA, their HR and hiring managers/directors take DAMN LONG to set up interviews and hiring processes.

I received verbal offer and salary package 2 days after my final interview and am pending updates following that.

Thanks for the advice. Much appreciated. I don’t dare to take the risk of informing my supervisor as there’s no certainty that I would get the job, and this might only jeopardise my current job in the event that the new company didn’t offer me.

You listed current supervisor as reference? Unless you had communicated with your current supervisor about leaving, if not, why would you list current supervisor as reference?
