We already warn you before joining that this will be physically and mentally challenging.
Please make a self-assessment if you can cope before joining, else you’ll just end up resigning early if you overestimate your own abilities.

Not OP but I wish I knew about this forum before joining. No one warned me and just told me it's great for learning yada yada my batchmates all went to great places yada yada. Maybe >5 years ago the workload was lighter and there was fewer competition for good jobs.

>5 years ago, more locals were willing to do audit in big 4.
but afterwards, it got so unattractive for locals as other industries were better, so that was when the jhk malaysian floodgates opened.
thats why u see commercial or what finance department, majority is malaysian.

The workload and culture has been this way for decades. This thread has been here since 2011.
You shouldn't be surprised, unless you really didn't do any homework before joining and just listened to your batchmates. (Huh, really got people make life-changing decisions from batchmates advice?)
Correct on the competition - there were fewer better opportunities back then.

1. ">5 years ago, more locals were willing to do audit in big 4" - Completely agree. They sold the 先苦后甜 late game hero branding well.
2. "it got so unattractive for locals as other industries were better" - Completely agree, other fields offered better packages without the need to 苦 for 3 to 5 years.
3. "so that was when the jhk malaysian floodgates opened." - statistically, I don't think the number of foreigners in the B4 firms have increased in the past 5 years, so I don't believe this to be factual, although your mileage may vary.

Not from batchmates, from seniors, relatives, and people everywhere across industries (banking, fp&a, consulting, cfos, etc). I guess during their time SWEs didn't get paid 20k per month so there wasn't many better options.
