Hi all,

I have a second upper class honours degree from NUS, but I am considering taking a second bachelors degree part-time at Unisim while working a full-time job, reason being that I don't enjoy working in my current industry and I want to switch careers.

It's kind of an unspoken rule, I believe, that Unisim grads tend to lose out to NUS/NTU/SMU grads when it comes to getting job interviews for government jobs.

My question is, since I already have a 'good honours' NUS degree, will I have trouble applying for jobs in my new career area if I study for my second degree at Unisim?

For example: My NUS second upper hons degree is in engineering, but now I study mass comm at Unisim...and I apply for comms jobs in the civil service...got chance to even get interview or not?

You don't need a second degree to switch to Communications ... It's not a field that requires certified skill sets. You may even have more difficulties getting into CS if you are applying with the UniSIM degree.

agree with this. More apt to state how many hours you are working a week, is it 60-70 hours?

that's just an example la... i'm asking about whether i should bother with the idea of a second degree from unisim to switch careers, in general, not for communications...

so you're saying no point taking a unisim second degree even if i already have a nus/ntu/smu good honours first degree?

Point in initial post still stands. Unless the field that you are eyeing requires specialisation, e.g. engineering, accounting and etc., taking a second degree (from UniSIM, no less) is a major waste of time and funds IMO.

I also take it that you still intend to enter the CS in the end, Engineering to Communications as a mere example or not. In this case, your first degree from NUS/NTU/SMU will be of far more assistance than the UniSIM one.

And no offence meant to UniSIM folks. I am stating the facts.

i'm planning on going into psychology, and though it isn't a professional field like engineering, it's only open to psychology honours grads.

my second upper nus degree is in comms and new media. i can't apply to psych jobs with that.

No offence, but you might have quite a bit of problem finding a job with a psych degree. Especially one from unisim. There are seriously tons and tons of psych grads being pumped out of the local universities AND private ones. There arent many psych jobs to go around. but then again, even if you fail to get a psych job with your unisim degree, you can always fall back onto your nus degree to find another job.

I've heard of similar things from a NUS psych graduate, who end up continuing to post-graduate study in another field after failing to find a psychology job.
