Its a level of false assurance that the private sector is asked to do the job, which I guess is how MOM absolves itself of blame when sh1t hits the proverbial fan. Not to mention pmet Singaporeans being deprived of high-paying professional jobs in their own country of birth.

Given the way mom approaches maid issues, this is perfectly believable. But nothing we can do if they don't want to work for the benefit of singaporeans. We just have to work to ensure our skills set are always relevant.

Hi, I was deciding for a mid-career switch to the public sector and recently went for some interviews with some of the statboards. Seems like they like to ask whether why do you want to join the public? How do you all usually answer this question?
And also, if after the interview, if I see the job posting being re-posted up on the careers@gov page, is it a sign that you have failed the interview? Lol! Thanks!

I somehow skipped that question when they asked and still got the job
I guess it depends on your hiring managers

totally agree that a person who joined as a fresh grad will get a lot more. Cannot expect to just cross over and get a comparable package. That's the most misunderstood fact.

Of course if you compare with someone who starts off in the Ministry from a fresh grad (not saying that you should compare) and after working for 13 years in that place, that person will definitely be paid more than what they offer you. Also, have to bear in mind it is a contract job.

Ya personally I took a drastic pay cut (8k -> 5.8k) moving from private sector to a SB to focus on family. For me it is well worth it considering the stability and significantly better work life balance (my job is WFH mostly and only takes up 2-3h a day to complete) which allowed me to have a side hustle (extra 3-3.5k). Been 2 years now and quite a well worth move I must say.

Wow that's the level of paycut which I declined. 2k+ is so much! Really no regrets?
What is your age range and side hustle? I imagine if you are in your late 20z early 30s, there is still runlength for progression vs someone who joined at 40yo.
Age discrimination is real!

Mid 30s, F, 2 kids. Looking back, no regrets (for mental/physical/family/emotion well-being). Of course, during that time there were plenty of doubts at the back of my head (could this be a stupid move?...). My ex-client contacted me to support them (as a hustle) after realizing I left my role and I got more referrals/assignments till I had to turn down many. When my kids are older in a few years and if there are still demand, I may focus full-time on my hustle as I realize the per hour rate is very high as compared to a full-time role.
I do not think it is age discrimination lah. I met quite a lot of colleagues around my age in my organization that are still at pretty junior level because they joined without relevant skillset but just need an iron rice bowl and comfortable work environment, to focus on other aspects of life. For reference, my manager (2 job grades above) is my age and is drawing around 7-8k, even if my pay is doubled, I will not want to be in that role.
