Pte uni (FCH), Arts.
NS in Mindef (if relevant at all)

Planning a switch to CS, specifically DSTA/MND/IMDA. Either in corp comms or policy track.

Reasonable to look at payscale 5k up? Would I enter as MX12?
Current sal is low 4k.

Thanks in advance!
As you are a private degree holder, I think it will be very unlikely that they will hire you.

I'm an NUS FCH graduate that recently started work in February at MCI with a gross monthly salary of $3.2K. I know that the 75th percentile has a median salary of $3.9K in my course. I accepted the job because I thought COVID affected the job market and I should just snatch whatever I get, since I'm a really risk-averse guy.

Can someone please advise on whether I should make the attempt to jump ship now? I know I may not land another role, but I'm wondering if I should try. I was going to stick it out for 1 year and then leave, but a person I know in MSF who works as an AD says there's no need to wait, I should jump ship now. I enjoy what I do and I really am grateful for this job, but I'm scared the longer I wait, the more my career will be affected.

Would really, really appreciate any advice. Should I at least attempt to interview at other ministries? I don't know whether jumping ship in just 3-4 months is a really bad look that will also haunt me wherever I go, but I also do need the pay as I'm supporting not just my family but my grandparents.

Thanks!
I'm shocked that NUS FCH with NS only 3.2k? And the Covid situation wasn't even that bad in Feb. This batch of fresh grads really die liao

Just ignore the AD, useless advise. How long is your probation? Done with it? What grade are you now?

The above comments are correct. If you move because of job scope, then its really your call and preference. But dont be surprised if you get a lower pay offer, cause i dont think 4 months experience will count towards anything.

If you move because of higher pay considerations, then its likely gonna be same pay. Moving btw agecies where both are MX scheme is movement policy. Unless you look at agencies with their own schemes (ie you resign from MX and join non-MX scheme) - and this is no guarantee of higher pay as well.

You wont know the offered pay, until after going through interviews and is selected. Just imagine going through 2 to 3 months of interviews, checks, etc and then get a lower pay offer. But if its due to current poor job fit or issues at MCI (and not pay related), then by all means do explore jumping ship.

You just started out for 4 months, dont catch what you mean by affecting career if you wait longer??

You holding a local dip, so that's good. Pte dip won't weight that much over your local dip in gov sector. It would be better to build on your experience before joining gov sector.

On average, it will take about 4 to 5 years for 1k increment. Do the math.

With at least 8 years relevant experience and good track record, it will be possible.

Anyway, good luck in your exploration into gov sector.
