Thank you for your reply. Looks like govt agencies are hiring people within the limits of their payscale. The superscale salary of DD/D are not that high either. The salary of DD/D are deem normal in the private industry and do not require tons of leadership records to achieve that because the private industry payscale have a way higher benchmark for that... Govt agencies do need to raise the benchmark to match against private industry though.

Guess i will not bend on any hope to join the govt sector, will just stick to private industry as for now.

I'm an NUS FCH graduate that recently started work in February at MCI with a gross monthly salary of $3.2K. I know that the 75th percentile has a median salary of $3.9K in my course. I accepted the job because I thought COVID affected the job market and I should just snatch whatever I get, since I'm a really risk-averse guy.

Can someone please advise on whether I should make the attempt to jump ship now? I know I may not land another role, but I'm wondering if I should try. I was going to stick it out for 1 year and then leave, but a person I know in MSF who works as an AD says there's no need to wait, I should jump ship now. I enjoy what I do and I really am grateful for this job, but I'm scared the longer I wait, the more my career will be affected.

Would really, really appreciate any advice. Should I at least attempt to interview at other ministries? I don't know whether jumping ship in just 3-4 months is a really bad look that will also haunt me wherever I go, but I also do need the pay as I'm supporting not just my family but my grandparents.

Thanks!
Uh...even with movement policy, i think you should really only jump after finishing at least 1-2 years, or at least that's what my HR (im from SB) advised when i asked about movement. Reason being, if you jump in less than 1-2 years, you hardly learned anything on this job and your new SB may also take you in as just another inexperienced fresh grad (0-1 years hardly count for formal experience).

Which means, if you jump now and get accepted a fresh grad in this current covid climate, you risk drawing an even lower market rate than your current 3.2. If i were you? Stick it out until the economy recovers.

May release in the later part of June (where the mid year bonus period is usually announced), maybe 3rd week? Just that now it is not so good news.

Hope there won't be a pay cut. May have to start paying cash for mortgage if that happens.

I have made 2 posts so far regarding this matter and this will be my last one. My final comments on this matter are as follows:

(1) There is no longer any point in continuing this conversation. The existing difference in opinion is occasioned by diametrically opposing belief systems. Neither side is willing to consider that the other might be correct in their analysis of the current job market. Only time will tell. I will leave it to do its job.

(2) I think the best way to survive this crisis is to take a socialist slant towards our expectations of life - Everyone takes a cut today (trust me when i say it is really bad in some circles) so that we can prosper together tomorrow. My issue is not that taxpayer money is being used to support the traineeships (which is why it was a by the way point) - my issue is that despite knowing that FOUR budgets have been released this year resulting is god know how much deficit to the country's budget - there is still a selfish streak of "i deserve more because im a grad and have done internships". Everyone is suffering, having a degree and having done internships does not make you special. Take a hit now. You will be rewarded when the economy recovers. This is why one part of cs bonus is tagged to the performance of the economy.

(3) My hope is that all fresh grads can find jobs because that means you can kick start the recovery process by contributing to society in the form of your taxes...and of course being financially responsible for yourself so you don't become a burden to the state. If you can find a 3.5k/4.6k job - even better, you contribute more to the recovery of the economy. I hope all of you find your 3.5k/4.6k jobs. Like i said, only time will tell.

To be honest I have been working in gov for 3 to 4 years
so far havent gotten 4k salary yet. So well.. no comments..
May just need luck.
Good luck to all and one day i want to get 4k plus and maybe 8k to 10k too

Hey guys, how impt is the starting salary for one's first job? Female fch from nus. HR is offering around 3.3k mnthly basic pay for a mx-track position in a ministry. I really like the job; the only caveat is the relatively low starting pay.

Have also received other offers paying significantly better in the high 4k range at other ministries, but i think i might excel better in the former position. Is it worth it to sacrifice a 1k difference in starting pay for better career advancement prospects?
