Does anyone know how the working culture at MOM is like? Also, which departments are better for career advancement

What age is the 'maximum' for a guy with ns to join civil service for it to be 'worth it'?
If I am 28/turning 29 is it still worth joining or will I 'lose out' compared to younger people who have more chances to get promoted?

Got called to attend MOH group meeting/discussion session with asst directors for the job of health policy planner (manpower and education dept).
First time I'm going for such group sessions...any tips? The HR person told me it's informal. It's the first so-called interview, no written test or one-to-one interview earlier... Must wayang a lot or not? Cos I can't stand that.

I think it's a panel interview with the reps of a few departments interviewing you, quite common for ministries which usually have vacancies across some departments and they interview you to see if you are suitable to join one of them.
Just be yourself and portray confidence. It can be seen as a bit of wayang but i think it's important to leave an impression on them. You can also use the chance to ask the different departments questions to form an impression of what they do and if that's something you would like to try.
If the interviewers find you suitable, you probably will do a written test and have another interview with the department director, and/or the deputy secretary (like no. 2 guy in the organization). Good luck!

Attended such a session before with one of the civil service deparment. They called it a tea session, but it was really just an informal group chat with a few of the relevant department heads and the candidates.
As the previous poster said, just be yourself. We were asked a lot of personal questions like our hobbies etc. So maybe be prepared for that also. I think they were trying to assess our interaction and communication skills before deciding to go further and conduct the interview. I did have to do the essay on the same day itself though.

i join at the age of 30 at entry grade. lose out a lot compared to my peers and whoever join earlier even they grad later than me. my pay is a 4-digit difference to my peers, no joke. my pay is only slightly higher than a fresh grad.
those who join earlier when they first grad will get promoted first, so at 28/29, highly likely they get 1 promotion already while i got to wait for my turn, which is 4 years wait, earliest 3 years.
i'm treated as a mid-career job wise, but promotion wise, i have to wait at the end of the Q. it does affect my morale sometimes.
do note i'm comparing farmers, same uni, same course, same dept, same class honours. not sure if it's same for all statboard/ministries.
in case someone ask why i get so low pay, i got no chips to bargain my pay as i'm severely underpaid in private.

Wow, you're considered entry level despite having some years of experience? Was your job experience relevant?

I also joined civil svc at 30 on entry level MXO grade but have seen my pay double in my 6 years now.
You have the wrong approach if you think you just need to wait your turn to get promoted, you have to climb to the top of the pile. But that is probably why you are where you are now.

I heard that amount is about the same as a MX13 officer. Any HR can clarify?
