Wdym by longer lockstep system? As in a longer period of time to make JP compared to the current practice?

Also, how can it be lockstep if promotion (to the next grade, I presume) depends on performance? Lockstep implies the whole PQE batch moves up uniformly every year and they're paid on the same scale (excluding variable bonus).

if you read it properly - he obviously meant to say they "no" longer have lockstep system.

It's not bloody rocket science. Pay us higher and give us less work you dingbat.

His contradictory speech about how lawyers now are constantly connected, and have pressures of being constantly on the job, while simultaneously "shaming" lawyers for not "being married to their jobs" and saying that younger lawyers now want "family time" is also laughable. Oh no, it's unimaginable for my young Assocs to want to have a life, what will happen to the Partners' pockets if we can't oppress our Assocs for gain?

Also, this puts to rest the false notion of a glut. 697 lawyers were called last year, and 538 lawyers left the profession, meaning that there was only an increase of 150-odd lawyers to the profession. There is going to be an undersupply soon (which is already happening now - see the increase in salaries and the difficulties for medium sized firms to find assocs). I wonder just how much more of a undersupply would happen once Part B starts becoming harder.
I agree for most part.

I think it's a mismatch of expectations between the older and younger generation of lawyers. The older lawyers were trained "old school" style. It doesn't work with younger lawyers, who prefer their boundaries.

I concur, Sri Lankans are better than the run of the mill CECAs mass imported by pappies to replace the declining Singaporean population. Much better manners, less dubious qualifications and more willing to integrate into Singaporean society.

As a profession, we should warmly welcome our Sri Lankan peers with open arms to promote healthy competition in the local bar and increase the associates pool since so many of us are leaving the profession.

The issue is that the "old school" style (i.e. we work hard last time so you should work hard now like we did) is a complete fabrication. Lawyers in the past used to enjoy large salaries with minimal work and minimal competition. Since filing could not be done electronically, and messages between counsel were mostly posted by hand, there was always an inbuilt lag time between work.

Sure, I believe that "old school" lawyers worked hard, but they just did not have as much work to do as now.

However, nowadays, the old lawyers want to enjoy the best of both worlds... they want to maintain their big salaries, but refuse to hire more associates to handle the increased workloads that come with increased connectivity and 24/7 workloads.

They call young lawyers "lazy" for not working hard (to increase the Partners' profits) but ignore the fact that young lawyers today work harder than they ever did when the EPs were associates.

It's not a good feeling when a toxic boss tells u "oh I did it before what, I did my time liao" and pretend it's a shared rite of passage, when everyone knows the boss probably did half as many hours during his/her days as an associate.

The older lawyers enjoyed much better working hours than we did, but now complain when younger ones ask for a tiny fraction of time to rest.

Question for the trade lawyers here, can Singapore be sued by India for not respecting CECA?

Please undelist schools to deal with the supply shortage

We need more young lawyers from these schools as they value add. I am a fan of diversity. The quality of these graduates are assuredly better than the local sc&oqkwjxuid wjbdbc

Wait what??
