if you graduate from Melbourne law: I'd say work in Australia in a transactional practice first if you are able to. and if you can get into something more transferable like banking & finance at a mid or top tier, even better.
the toxic SG competitive culture from our education system here (esp NUS/ SMU) leaks into practice - translating into work cultures at many local firms (esp the big 4) that aren't as healthy compared to Aus (at least that's what I hear). So I wouldn't recommend grinding your initial years here if you have the option to do so in Australia. you can always come back later as a (foreign registered lawyer) lateral or in-house.
as to your question specifically, the profession in Singapore (excluding foreign lawyers) isn't the most diverse. I think people still compare NUS and SMU graduates. Some people also think that Aus is trash in general. You get the gist.
If I may, I think the question of 'where do you wanna work?' should guide your decision-making.

Thanks for all the advice. I'm currently nearing the end of my Commerce degree in Melbourne uni. I did my high school in Melbourne as well. My original plan was always to do law, but Melbourne only offers a JD, and I wasn't too keen on Monash.
Here's the thing. I have interned at one of the Big 4, and from what I've seen, there seems to be a healthy mix of lawyers from both local and international schools. Even lots from delisted unis such as Manchester, Exeter, and Leicester. Which strikes me as odd, given the (arguably true) stereotype that Asian countries are more prestige-obsessed than their Western counterparts. You said it yourself - lots of people still look down on Aussie unis and compare paper qualifications.
So why is it that lots of grads from 'inferior' overseas unis make it into the Big 4? You'd think HR at these top tier places would only hire Oxbridge/Harvard/ NUS/ SMU grads, no? What I'm trying to say is - in theory, paper qualifications should play a big part in career outcomes in Singapore. But in practice, from what I've seen at least - this doesn't necessarily seem to be the case.

Not everyone in the firm gets in through merit!
If things are so simple like you pointed out, then the world will be a better place.

Yeah what if a person is a first class hons but doesn’t have any connections as compared to a person from a third tier uni with parents businesses contributing $1-5M to a practice every year through massive M&A deals?

Yeah the people in here are really naive!
Can we get back to salaries. Otherwise start a new forum with less toxic.

Paper qualifications matter less than you think. After you get to the interview round, your paper is deemed OK already.
What matters now is your personality, attitude, and looks (chio/yandao or not). That's why you see plenty of grads from subpar universities get into Big 4.
