Salary question
Hi all, clueless student here! Could some nice senior please explain whether the salary figures floating around in this forum are generally inclusive of front loaded bonuses? If bonuses are front loaded, does that mean your bonus each year is fixed?
Also, what's the average yearly salary increment like? When lawyers are promoted (say from assoc to senior assoc) is there a larger pay jump or is it just the normal yearly salary increment?
A bit clueless about these things and have no one to ask. Thanks in advance

Yes. Generally inclusive of front loaded bonuses. But i've only ever heard of 1 firm exercising the clawback provision. Most eventually still get an additional bonus on top of the front loaded salary. Ofc, there are quite a lot of variables which may affect this - whether your partner likes you, whether it was a good year, whether the others in your team performed better or worse than you, your family background, whether you brought in files...etc etc etc
This is before covid, mind-you. I suspect things are different now... but i no longer have inside information. hahahahaha... best to ask seniors currently in the firm you're looking to join.

i rmbr a hearing where one party was represented by Firm A, who had taken over from Firm B (a supposedly 'reputable firm'). Firm B didn't do some work properly or it appeared that they didn't advise accurately, something like that. IIRC the judge basically said something to the effect of he's sure Firm B wouldn't have done such a thing.

You'd be surprised at the number of reputable firms that simply push work to juniors, leaving them to "die" with the cases that aren't "impt".

I chose to leave after noting some really unsavoury practices that were going on, taking a significant pau cut and drawing a lot of drivel from my ex-boss in the process. Nver slept better since.

So what’s a living wage for a lawyer who doesn’t want to play these games?

A lot of them continue to earn well - probably more than before if they weren't equity or profit-sharing.

Why are you still looking? No one who applied can meet your very high criteria for ppl with "good academics results"?
