I also know of 3 people who rejected Oxford for KCL law

Do you mean in London or SG? Either way, don’t think so unless your cv really has no demonstrable experience or good enough undergrad grade.

Very probable, if you actually want to put in the effort to learn about UK firms. Many Aussies, Kiwis, South Africans, Indians do take an LLM and apply for UK TCs (just check on LinkedIn). Not sure why more Singaporean’s don’t do the same.

Training at head office in London is much better than the same UK firm in Singapore (more resources, more breadth of practice areas, more established training programmes as compared to the Singapore office which will be 1/10 of the size of head office).

UK firms don’t emphasis on experience or grades as much as Singapore or American firms - there’s a minimum cut off for each but they really interview on whether you display certain personality traits and soft skills that will make you teachable / pleasant to work with as a colleague. Commitment to commercial law (in the form of understanding their clients) and to the firm (in the form of taking the time to attend grad rec events is also very important).

The idea is that most of law school is not very relevant to real work + their trainee intake is 50% non-law grads anyway so comparing grades is apples/oranges and they will take the time to retrain you once you actually start your training contract. That is why they have a two-year training period (during which you actually get paid) as opposed to the shorter/zero training period for SG/American firms.

But would the 1 year period be sufficient to find a TC there?

NGL the one year period is a risk, particularly since you don’t really have summer breaks to do vacation schemes. I have known people who have successfully applied directly during their Part A which is less upfront cost (they only needed to fly for interviews, now all interviews will be virtual which will save a lot).

Why not reach out on LinkedIn for NUS law grads in the UK and see if any are willing to offer advice?
