No need to chew out the kid lah. Honestly this kind of legal news saga and gossips, nobody outside of law cares.
Lawyers always think that outsiders care a lot about what's going on within their industry. Overinflated sense of importance. Truth is, no one cares. No one has bandwidth to pay attention to kacang puteh news like this, after the 5 minute news cycle has passed.
Its partially how the industry is structured - to idolize the top senior partners, 'dealmakers', SCs and judges like they're Gods. Entire industry magazines devoted to covering X lawyers jumping ship to Y firm. Honestly, no one outside gives a d__n.
Take it from someone who practised in a transactional area and is now in-house. Lawyers aren't anything more than glorified transaction support and paper pushers or business support. The real dealmakers are the C-Suite and financiers. Commerce is done by talking money, not by negotiating endlessly over obscure Clause 21.3 of appendix 4 of some document no one actually reads except the lawyers.

May be true for transactional lawyers who just facilitate deals which is still primarily driven by commercial people. But top litigators are not just "business support" or "paper pushers". Companies/top CEOs can get toppled by good litigators who find a winning argument or conduct a killer cross-examination.

Meh. Depends on what kind of lawyer your boss is, and the lawyer you are. Certain practice areas tend to create paper pusher lawyers (e.g. M&A, where there are lawyers are dime a dozen), but there are practice areas (yes, even transactional practice areas) where lawyers really can add value.

Yah it sounds horrible man. Used to sit in the bullpen as a trainee (at another B4) and got a room after call, seriously one of the best things that happened. Some of my bath mates from another dept didn’t have enough rooms for them and they had to sit outside as newly minted associates. Sucks for them man

You know your kid and your own financial situation best. Is he academically inclined? Can he take long hours and arguably abusive work environments? Do you trust him to pay you back? Do you expect him to pay you back? Can you manage a comfortable retirement without that HDB?
Just answer those questions then make your decision.
