It almost impossible to get a job in Singapore esp. you are foreigner because local sentiment at the moment is very narrow mind and racist. They rubbish CVs without SG/PR status at e door. U have no chance unless Singaporean from NUS.

A reputable overseas degree only help as much as a reputable local degree, nothing more. And frankly, stop that trite platitude on how overseas graduate think differently from local university graduates, which is untrue and ungrounded. I have been to the best universities in US and UK, and while there were a few odd balls, the thinking process for most students were remarkably similar.

I love this post (though I must say I have vested interest, being a local graduate).

You seem to have contradicted yourself. On what grounds do you say the 'thinking process' is similar? How is that 'true and grounded'?

They think differently because the culture and the norm is different.

Can you tell me who will win the next election in the US? Democrats or Republicans?

I can tell you 100% that the SG government won't change this election. 100% why? because local 'thinking process' dicatates that. Revolutionary thinking isn't the norm here. Will students from NUS march the streets and contest a ban on pornography? I don't think so..but if you ask ANY university in the US or UK and the students will be out within minutes.... Similar thinking processes? I don't think so...

I do admit that local employers do not perceive australian graduates as the best of the lot. I would think this is due to the sheer number of singaporeans getting external degrees from australian universities from private schools such as SIM. However, top australian universities do not offer such external programs and its mostly the middle to the lower tier ones that do so.

The second thing i would like to address is the experience of studying overseas. It is something that is irreplacable and i think one should have to chance if financial constraints permit. Having to wash your 1 month old sock, your 6 month old bed sheet, running out of allowance before the month is up and cooking your own dinner is something that you hate but you will remember fondly of the times you HAD to. More importantly, I believe it allows you to view the world in a different perspective and this in turns makes you a more well rounded, open minded and receptive person.

Saw PM on Facebook with some comments on Foreign Talent/Foreign Trash.

Where are all these jobs that are being given out to Foreigners? I know a friend who's been trying to find a job for 6 months but to no avail, having applied for everything from Managers to lowly paid workers.

How are Singaporeans losing out to foreigners when every single job application is SG/PR only? There's something missing regarding hatred of foreign workers.

That is why Australia uni or not, Singaporeans will always get the jobs even when it is not economical or logical to do so, but yet, they complain and moan moan moan. I would love if Malaysia opened up a Special Region, under it's own governance which allowed MNCs to invest and made the area as safe as Singapore to attract all foreign talents, then Singapore will see the benefits on having FTs..

When you actually lived there and experience things, you will definitely think differently and see how a western country actually differs from our usual daily perception.

Singapore to Australia isn't very far as well. Its only a 6.5 hours flight or even 4 hours flight if you chose to study in Perth. Not only so, you will be able to travel around Australia during your breaks with your friends or family.

You will meet all sort of people whom you will never see in Singapore. Now I am back in Singapore to work, I do see that having a reputable overseas degree (ANU, UMelb, USyd, those universities from the group of 8) do help in your job searching. I also realise how graduates from overseas thinks differently from local universities graduates. Furthermore, when you interact with people, you can share your experiences with others which people can feel and differiate yourself from others. So, if you have the opportunity/chance to study overseas, why not! I didn't regret going overseas to study at all!

Give yourself a chance, and it will be an amazing experience.

Good luck!
Thanks! You sound like you do have hell lotsa fun there.

Which course did you do back then?

The problem here is simple. The government has been handing out PR's and citizenships without adhering to any strict guidelines in order to boost the population. The govt justifies their actions as necessary as the birthrate in sg is far too low. I believe singaporeans are not against FT. But rather the issue is whether these FT's are indeed adding value to our society. For example, the amount of mainland chinese cooking in our kopitiams is astounding and what is more amazing is that most have PR's or even citizenship and the media have reported that many intend to return to their homeland when they have enough money to retire. Do we really need them, when these jobs could have been taken up by singaporeans? Contrast this to workers party taiwanese born corporate lawyer chen show mao. It is clear he adds value to singapore through his credentials and look at how receptive the public has been to him.

Indeed I had!

I did both my Bachelor of Science and Master of Management at UMelb. I have friend's who are studying at SMU, and realise they are missing out alot on the quality of life as being a student. Everyday, they are filled with projects projects and projects. It made me realise that how lucky I was to be able to appreciate the quality of life in my uni days. It's like you go to uni for 2-3 hours a day and if you are lucky enough, you might only have 3 days of school. The only time you will be worried/stress is when exams or assignments are due (haha!). Apart from that, most of your time are spend with friends, lazing around at home, chilling at the cafe and travelling.

Over the weekends, you can hop onto Jetstar or Virgin Blue, and realise you are in Sydney (which is another beautiful state especially if you prefer city life).

You will be amazed with the number of Asians there (esp in UMelb and Monash), so don't worry about that! Plus, you will meet people from all over the world and seeing how rich those PRC are (compared to the ones we see in Sg) and how they spent their money.

So, I would highly recommend you to go overseas if you have the opportunity. Not only to see the world, but also experience things which you can never experience in Singapore.

Best of luck!
