ST can take advantage of the china-west decoupling by buying from china, putting on label and writing some documentation and maybe tightening a few screws on singapore and selling to western countries at huge markup.
That way you don't need to hire smart people at bottom. Engineers need only enough to intelligence to chop and sign can already.

Reverse engineering software takes as much talent and skill as trying to build it from scratch. I've done it myself.
And the outlook for ST when it comes to ROI is very short. 6 month want to see profit already. What can you do with 1 month R+D?
Structually ST is not built up to do R+D. It is more like an import and export main biz, where there is small side dept doing packaging.
Not saying whether it is good or bad, somebody said what's wrong with earning more money. It's just expectations - don't expect to do any deep R+D there.

not necessarily. in my experience, high pay and work life balanced can be acheived, if everyone in the organization is super focused and don't waste time on nonsense and playing politics.
if you have incompetent aunties and uncles parachuted from goodness knows where and only know how to shout and scream asking people to chiong in all directions because they have no idea what to do?
of course end up no day no night la. as in.
"Once we escalate to management, there will be no day no night,
