i was just thinking that the experience of some could help others evaluate their situation early and reflect whether they need to rethink their career path.

about two years ago when i interviewed for one of the MSO roles, i met this lady who is in her mid 30s and married with two kids, dip holder in a semi-govt stat board for over 10 years as well and salary was about 3K or more also.

i guess all these reasons made it hard for her to move, despite wanting very much to leave and going for interviews every now and then. she is still there today the last i asked.

hope to encourage those who are younger to not be afraid to step out of their comfort zone, whether it is to seek opportunities in a more challenging environment. or to take a useful part time degree. the world is your oyster!

otherwise, once you are older and especially after you start a family and have more commitments, for most people, it will be very hard for them to leave.

Take me for eg. I joined when I was 22yo, immediately after R.O.D., now 44yo, full of sadness and self blame on my inability to forecast my future. Joining the stat board filled with aspiration and the desire to advance for a better paycheck n work life balance to foster bond with my family. Thinking as long I put in my heart n soul, give in my outmost effort to do a job n serve with pride, i can be success. Never did I know the so-called, performance, the aptitude and the attitude, not only can it use to promote a favourite staff but also can be placed to destroy a person. No matter how much effort and time u put it in, it is futile. Seeking advice to go for further study to upgrade to degree, looks like it is just wasting of time and precious $, so what now i have yrs of experience in the same job n armed with a degree. No promotion mean no promotion but can only see those keep getting promotion easily. Age has catch up, stagnant salary at entry grade, family broken down, wife left me, can only see daughter once in a week and need to pay for maintenace fee, lost my flat, my life in a bleak, am just hoping I can buy a old ppl studio apt when i reach 55yo, i cant forver live in my parent's hse. No one has to gone thru all these agony and this makes me unable to leave the job but to stay till i retire. Filled with sadness, it makes me lost confident in going on further. i felt my greatest regret is nv plan my future when i am young. For the recent plan to allow non-degree holder to advance, i dun think it is of any help, it is still depend on your supervisor/bosses. Of cos i believe there will be a handful who will be benefit from it, but still the older staff will be left out, esp the ones with degree as it only help the non-degree to advance faster.

Hi I have just applied for MSO under SPF. Any SPF MSO here? I am scheduled for an interview next week. Any idea will I be bonded? I am 24 this year, non-degree holder. Once worked as a MSO in Attorney General's Chambers. Will my starting pay be the same as an A level holder?

in my second job in the legal industry now with a pay difference of 1K. recently went to explore an opening and was offered low 3K, which means 1K+ increment in 1.5 years.

of course, govt sector has its advantage. more leave. i assume MSOforlife, you have 20+ days? pte sector many places don't offer so much leave with the exception of some industries like banking.

but anyway, most ppl whether MSOs or MXOs get C for appraisal. just that C equivalent for MSOs for PB is quite miserable.

i'm curious do you face any challenges after leaving govt? Like did anyone ask why you want to leave govt because is "iron rice bowl". How to get pay increment of 1k?

fyi,i just graduate from poly this year and I joined govt sector as a fresh graduate but my pay is slightly lower than yours.

nope, in my first legal job, my bosses are quite opened-minded. not those type with the mindset that x diploma or x experience, can only do x job. and i was in a coy where the turnover was relatively high and salary was just slightly higher than my CS job but very heavy work load and fast paced work, so they weren't extremely picky as they needed the candidate to join quickly as well.

then i used the experience i gained (although quite minimal) to jump ship. bonus was also quite high, so i asked the job agent to ask the current coy to at least match my annual package.

i though CS pay is standard one for starting...

anyway, don't stay there too long, pick up some transferrable skills or some skills that you can tell ppl that are transferrable. where is your diploma in?

I can't really get use to the the environment there eventhough I have already work for 6months. all my life i've been rushing for school, assignments & work commitment. stats board pace is just too slow for me.. Actually right from the start like first month I have been complaining about my work becos whenever i ask my sup question 95% of the time I will get "i don't know" as my answer which is totally different from private sector. basically I do almost everything as a admin or the first person people will approach whenever they need anything from admin. while my colleague portfolio only have like 1-2 major item and i don't understand why the boss can let them stay there for many years.

I graduate with Diploma in Business from TP. any advise should i take SIM GE, RMIT degree in accountancy or UniSim Bachelor of business? why i choose 2 diff course in both school? because if i take accountancy in unisim I will only graduate in 4.5years provided i did not fail any module and take 4-5module every semester. for RMIT i am exempted for basic modules.

Im also currently working as an mso.. 2 years plus already and i am bored of my work.. earning abt $2.5k.. been trying to findfor a new job since last year but go many interviews but unsuccessful.. ao stuck here for now.. i also do mstly admin, everything taichi to me.. and if not goes well than try find my mistake.. so for now i just take my monthly salary and do my work as much as i can cos in my heart i no longer want be there.. just keep on finding a new job and wait for year end bonus.. haha.. btw am also studying part time.. i think a mso even u slack hard for u got sacked.. worst they can only play with ur PB and increment.. cos in order for u to get sacked, ur superior must go a whole lot of trouble and process.. cos end of day only the PS can terminate your employment.. bosses little power.. am still hoping to get at least a $3k job once got my degree..

At first I wanted to stay here until I graduated but seems like this job is totally unfit for me. Don't really like the environment.. I have also calculated each year increment less than &100 and I don't really learn something. For my case, before i graduated from poly I start looking for job and this was my first interview. Should count myself lucky becos I only go for 2 interview. Where are you studying?

your colleague is dip also or deg? support stuff usually get delegated a lot of sai kang and mundance stuff.

yup, liti is quite tensed most of the time but not every firm/team got a lot of OT. corp and finance is usually better though! i heard IP is quite easy and they do take in newbies, mostly just support one exec for big firms.

regarding your degree choice, auditors or acccountants sometimes work long hours also. can be past midnight time during peak period. take the course you think you are more interested in but if you just want to get a degree, then whichever is easier, probably biz since you have some background.

if you plan to work for private sector, which degree doesn't matter as much. of course, if you can, local route might still be better in some cases.
