In a statboard. Working alongside bright minds, scholars and farmers like ourselves (cohesively!). Results truly doesn’t matter.
Good for you!

Some statboard and ministries are still very academic oriented.

depends on your job scope.. in most SB (not Min), they look for specialised skillset rather than your academic, you still need to be a degree holder though.

i am also from private U, 35 this yr, mx10

the odds are not in your favour bah.

if u compare 100 private uni grads with 100 NTU/NUS grads across the board, do u really think both groups will have equal number of MX10s?

hmm.. you may be right but honestly i do not have the stats.
what i can share is if you are capable at your work domain, with good writing and presentation skills, you will likely be recognised and move up the ladder..

whether you are local U or not

u are not wrong in that it boils down to one's capability. That's one of the factors. But if u go deeper, it is the same reason why some had gone to certain unis and the rest did not. The other factor being that where one comes from counts. It adds up in terms of CEP and progression. It is too simplistic to think that it is not a factor. Similarly, i wont argue that being a non-scholar, i can outshine an AO if i am more capable than him/her. It just doesnt work that way.

certainly. its a good discission here and i agree with you that local u and scholar will still have advantage over the rest.
but i see that the gap had narrowed down and the more emphasis had shifted towards skillset/capabilities instead of the old way - academic

the purpose of my post is to encourage everyone from non local u (who are in PS or CS) to give yourself a chance, work hard and move up the ladder. if you have the mindset that no matter how well you do, you will never overtake local u, then you had already lose at the start of the race.

i feel like it's a little lowballing. heard that those under MA prog, gets 4.2k for fresh grads.
update: received a conditional offer. confirm they are offering 3.9k, but based their annual package on 15.5-month basis (which of course will be lower due to covid). should i continue to slog in big 4 given that bonus and increment is uncertain, or just take on this job, with lesser progression? still feel kinda lowballed cos of covid unfortunately

FYI: they offered me on a 2-year contract basis

The fact is, if you are a scholar, your MINIMUM outcome is Director. If you are a farmer, your MAXIMUM is Director.
Below Director, there is room for all sorts and backgrounds. But don't assume you'll move up the ladder at the same rate or end up at the same level.
