You older guys are too conservative. You always think for tomorrow but never live for the present.

Save so much to spend later. You defer gratisfaction but forget that tomorrow may never come.

I've seen enough of my older generation (relatives), hording cash. Thinking that when they retire they can finally achieve the things they want to.

Who benefits in the end? Children.

My dad drove a Jap car all his life. At age 56, he finally thought it was "safe" enough to spend on luxury. He bought his dream car finally last year (shortly after I bought mine).
Dude at age 56 who gives a damn what car you drive? You are just like any old fart driving a merc.

There's a commodity in life that once spent can never be earned back. That's Time. You only have certain phases in your life to achieve things, once over you can only reminsce.

I spend as much as I can now but I don't overstretch myself. I make sure I can survive.

As for my house, I can weather through 2-3 years of downturn. My wife works for government, so no way will she get retrenched. Not forgetting civil bonus is quite good.

You won't have a chance at my condo, if you are thinking of firesale, sorry not going to happen for this unit.

A bulk of the info shared here are probably just BS. Kids who can't even spell or form proper sentences are claiming that they are earning like 9-20k a month. But, yea, good for you if you're taking over your dad's famous bak kut teh store.

Definitely won't need an honours or any special talent to take over a food stall, lol. Just make sure your dad run through the recipe with you a few times before his last breath.

Why so much venom? I thought we were supposed to have a sharing environment here.

Some people make more money than others, that's a fact of life.

My mum told me when i was had my "bad" PSLE result of 260+ (2 older brothers had 278 and 276)
"Son, they will always need people to deep fry the french fries at McDonald's so i won't be worried you will die of starvation. But don't be that person."

I wish i was earning $35k/month like the guy sitting opposite me, or $42k/month like the guy sitting next to me.

Careful my friend. You are treading on thin ice. S$3.5k/month - $4.2k/month you probably will get nice comments from forumers. S$35k-42k/mth, you are in-line for bashing. Most importantly, use spell check.. or else...

base on your PSLE result 260+, you should be the top 5-10% of your cohort...why in the end you couldn't even get into local university?!?!

Mid life crisis

Dear experts,

I am in my mid-40s and now in a mid-life crisis.
I work as a manager in the back office of a financial institution.
I work well with others but due to nasty politics, I'm unable to climb higher.

I feel very down, everyday going to the office, knowing that I am not realizing my full potential. I feel like quitting, but with family obligations (mortgage, kids, parents, etc), I can't do that.

Changing to a new company is also not easy in this environment. I'm thinking of joining the teaching profession or perhaps become a real estate agent or financial planner.

Can any experts here help advise? Currently I'm earning $110k per annum. Would these jobs give me that much?

What would you do if you're in my situation?

Why quit when you are already in your 40s? How long have you been with the bank?

Why not wait / volunteer for retrenchment? My colleague was in the bank for over 20 years. She told my boss she wanted to quit and my boss was kind enough to arrange for her to be retrenched instead.
