I was a SVP in a medium sized company 5 years ago. The company went through a restructuring and as a result, I was retrenched. I was well compensated and felt happy. I tried getting a new job in my field but unfortunately was not successful as i was either too senior or too experienced. Those staff junior to me also find it difficult and ended up driving taxis. I thought of driving a cab too but can't bring myself to this as I was a somebody and don't want my ex-colleagues to know. Worse, my passenger could be one of my ex-subordinate. Most people just say, don't be fussy, etc, but to me it was too hard to bear.

I had a good talk with my wife and she totally understand my plight. She too would not stoop so low to be a tea lady or clerk if she is to be retrenched from her current director position. So, we both agreed that I don't have to work anymore as I have worked so hard for the past 30 years. So we decided to sell our semi-D for $3m. We then bought a brand new condo for $1m for stay and bought another two relatively new condos next to MRT stations for rental. All paid for, no loan. The rental condos give me a net passive income of $5k per month in total. Wth my wife's salary of $10k per month, we managed. Our expenses in total are about $11k a month, so we still managed to save about $4k a month. I'm 50 this year. Debt free.

You worked for 30 yrs and only 50 now? A lot of things you said don't quite add up. Further more your director wife is only earning $10K a month. Not say I say, but $10K is not a lot. A hardworking taxi driver can earn $5-6K per month. How long were you an SVP? Some more in an SME? How much was remuneration?

Based on what you said, I think your family not required to pay income tax.

After reading thru this thread, look like many ex high achieving Singaporean men were retrenched in their late 40s to early 50's and were forced to retire early. But their "slightly" lower (still high) flying wives managed to keep their jobs despite being around same age. If this is true, old wives would surely out-earned their men in their life-time. So it's a myth than men earn more than women that are well publicized.

What does this mean? Singaporean men getting more disliked/useless as they aged while women getting more liked/useful as they age?

How could u come to this conclusion? I suspect the same one or two posters posted the story over and over again, with some changes to the plot each time. Also how did you end up with the conclusion that old wives out-earned their hubbies?

At the transitioning.org website you will see a fair spread of men & women who Kena retrenched. No gender bias to retrenchment.
