Yes, JLCs get higher pay - but that is also because they have first class honors. It is quite a fair bit more.
Confidential probably because it is just a sensitive issue that legal service payscale is very different and much higher than that of the regular civil service.

Quite a bit more? But they're fresh grads who usually haven't even finished training and therefore aren't qualified! How much can the difference be...?

Hi guys, out of topic here but would appreciate some advice on non-compete/competition agreement clauses in employment contracts.

Is it enforceable in Singapore?

My understanding is that most of the time it is not enforceable and only meant to intimidate employees unless it is reasonable and specific, in that it seeks to protect proprietary information/business that certain employees hold which could potentially lead to a loss for the employer (and has to be proven)

If the non-compete clause is general and only says you can't join companies in similar sector/industry just because you worked in company A, then most likely it won't stand in the eyes of the law and will be void when trial in court.

Is my understanding above correct?

Thank you

JLCs, like all other LSOs, operate on a different scheme. Look at the legal profession act on qualifications. JLCs and other fresh LSOs don't need to have completed the bar, or to be qualified in order to appear in court... And similarly, they get their full salary (and not a token practice training allowance) during their bar, and practice training period. Because of this, they actually make more than the fresh private sector lawyers for the first 3 years at least.

Default LSO/JLC salaries

Unregistered 17/3 is correcto.

The people who secure JL clerkships can easily get hired by the top tier firms or the internationals, which are market leaders in the pvt sector. There must be an incentive for these high flyers to want to be in Legal Service, rather than starting straightaway at private firms. Remember that years spent in civil service is opportunity cost, compared to their peers who are gaining experience in the private sector.

Government pays well, but never as high as the top earners in private sector. Of course in the latter, it is a free-for-all. The top 10% gets 90% of the revenue, that kind of thing.

JLC calibre law grads have great potential being top private sector earners. So Legal Service must be attractive to compete for talent.

Does anyone know if it is possible for a lawyer with 2 years work experience in India to get a job in Singapore?

Depends. If your degree is from India, can keep dreaming. If its from a reputable university in UK/US, then there might be a chance.

Its from India unfortunately. So what else can I do?
I don't think I would even be eligible for the Singapore or the British certification as I do not have the requisite 3 years experience.

May be able to be registered as a foreign lawyer if you could find any law firm willing to hire you to as legal counsel on indian law (usually commercial/financial related).
