Generally regular hours for industry std, usually start between 830-10 and doesn’t usually go past 730-8. weekends sporadically touched, save for exigencies. Takes a while to be SA here, usually at the 4-5 PQE.

I have no seccie, I do my own admin lol.

Not too recent Aus grad here at an international firm doing corp and private equity work. There are more of us here and at other places than you realise. You may not realise it, but firms are actually hiring us.

The good thing about the legal career, especially now that many recruitment partner committees are made up of younger generations, including people like me in a few years.

We care only if you're good. That does not equal only NUS/SMU or Oxbridge.

Indeed many of the SUSS, Australian and former delisted UK uni students are doing very well now. If not before, then because they've stuck through and lateralled after a few years when fewer lawyers stay in the middle.

So, take comfort that a good lawyer can come from anywhere.

In fact, I see more NUS/SMU students struggle than overseas grads - because there're so many of you, and the student culture is so toxic amongst each other (though there have been quite a lot of nice batches lately who co-exist with the overseas students now).

Hopefully that changes. We could do with more support, comradeship and encouragement in the community
Understand that good law schools may not make good lawyers
And not so good law schools may not make poor lawyers

But how would HR and recruitment partner know from the outset at the point of hiring that the not so good lawyers would produce good assocs next time??

The only reasonable way of solving this does seem to be to take the law students from goor schools to minimise this risk

It’s a great pity
This honestly sounds like every law firm that I interned at over here in Malaysia. Even the big law firms work like chinatown law firms in SG. They no-offered almost the majority of the class after they have completed their pupilage or the so-called "TC" in SG.

Malaysia is a s**t tier economy, no offense. Your politicians do a disservice to their people.

Even a strong economy like SG can only support so many lawyers, since legal industry is a quaternary sector. Meaning lawyers support the tertiary sector like finance. What more Malaysia which has a financial market in the s**tter.

The average M'sian lawyer is grossly below par. Very substandard and poorly trained and way out of depth. I have worked with some in SG registered as foreign lawyer here.

Anyone knows what is the GPA cut-off to transfer into NUS/SMU law? Trying to transfer but the astronomical fees made me re-evaluate my decisions.

so were most Malaysian lawyers that you run into practising transactional or litigation law in Singapore?

That's not reasonable $$/hr. If you're drawing 6.5 a month when you're 2020-called in private practice, you should be looking to move unless your CV is absolute shite. Even B4 NQs are better paid than you.

I didn't say foreign trained lawyers are substandard. I said the M'sian qualified lawyers i've had the opportunity to cross paths with with were all sub standard imo

There are many E&W Australian and HK qualified lawyers here that I've worked with that were absolutely sharp and blow your average Singaporean Big 4 associate or even partner out of the water.
