In other news, need a JLC or some sexy lawyer woman with hairy pussy to give me a golden shower, preferably a strong urgent stream, thanks.
Meanwhile, even a middling City outfit like Hogan Lovells is now paying their NQs £120K (SGD 200K) per annum

Be grateful for what you have. Think about those unlucky sobs who have to slog it out at Chinatown firms for $4000 a month

Probably not. You should probably keep your hard earned HDB
1. many/most end up leaving the industry so there's no guarantee your investment will be worthwhile.
2. he should have multiple tries to apply for nus/smu during army? how about suss?
3. durham / warwick grads are not particularly sought after in sgp... UK is an option but durham / warwick is behind oxbridge/london schools
4. can go to a local U and backdoor into law by taking up double degree in 2nd year onwards

Uncle no offense but your thinking is 25 years outdated liao. maybe in your time you saw all those conveyancing lawyers raking in easy money, Shanmugam and Davinder and other big names rising and earning big bucks in big cases. The industry has changed. In the present day, law is not a golden ticket, more like a hard slog with no guarantee of financial success. Perhaps only slightly better than being an auditor or civil engineer.

It is very unwise to jeopardize your hard-earned nest egg to fund your child for an expensive lower tier UK law school with no guarantee of making it to the top firms where the pay is worth it.

Anyway nowadays there are so many viable and decent paying career paths for young people that are not law. Even studying business in a local uni is a good outcome. You should encourage him to explore other interests.

Default JLV/FLA Firms

So, I was bored and decided to search the registry to look at the jlv/fla firm structures. This is what I got:

JLVs
1. Baker McKenzie Wong & Leow
2. Clyde & Co Clasis Singapore Pte Ltd
3. Duane Morris & Selvam
4. Hogan Lovells Lee & Lee
5. Kennedys Legal Solutions Pte Ltd
6. Mayer Brown PK Wong & Nair Pte Ltd
7. Pinsent Masons MPillay LLP
8. RPC Premier Law Pte Ltd
9. Simmons & Simmons JWS Pte Ltd

FLAs
10. Ashurst ADTLaw
11. Clifford Chance Asia
12. CMS Holborn Asia
13. Herbert Smith Freehills Prolegis
14. Nishimura & Asahi-Bayfront Law Alliance
15. Norton Rose Fulbright Ascendant
16. Reed Smith Resource Law Alliance
17. Stephenson Harwood (Singapore)
18. Watson Farley Williams & Wong Tan & Molly

SLPs
19. Bird & Bird ATMD LLP
20. Dentons Rodyk & Davidson LLP
21. Withers KhattarWong LLP

Quite strange that the last three are registered as SLPs. I always thought they were JLV/FLAs. Curious how they can be considered international firms if they're structured as SLPs - seems like they're marketed as "fully integrated mergers".

Interestingly, there're a lot of foreign lawyers in Bird & Bird and Withers that would make me think it's hard to structure them as SLPs. Don't they need a 2:1 SL/FL ratio?

In any event, to clarify for people, JLVs are separate entities while FLAs consist of two entities - the foreign entity and the singapore entity

Also, if i'm missing any feel free to put them down

In any event, to clarify for people: JLVs are an integrated entity which both sg and foreign lawyers can be part of (with the exception of liti lawyers) whereas FLAs consist of two separate entities - the foreign entity and the singapore entity that share only the brand.

Also, if i'm missing any firms feel free to put them down

Your son might have to go for postgraduate LLM from OxBridge in order to improve his employment prospects. Many Singaporeans have done that in the past and are quite successful.

Question is, are you willing to take the risk?

They are not mutually exclusive. These firms satisfy the requirements to be SLPs under the Law Practice Entities rules, i.e. the relevant cap on total number of foreign lawyers by headcount, and caps on equity ownership and/or control by foreign lawyers.

At the same time, the Singapore EPs are also EPs in the international entity and the profit pools can be integrated.

Any excess foreign lawyers may operate out of the same office but are not necessarily employed by the Singapore entity.

"Fully integrated merger" is a marketing phrase and not a term of art.
