Depends. Those not hiring Singaporeans anyway won’t bat an eyelid since they want actual US practice experience.

Nonetheless, might help you with the others more genuine about the Asia market

There are intl firms which will hire from the SG assoc pool who will hire you and sponsor your foreign bar fees. This is the best (and pretty much only way) to lateral into a US firm.

Hi! I'm currently a Y2 in NUS/SMU law, trying to decide where to intern in the coming summer but honestly kind of sotong and so would appreciate any guidance at all. My grades aren't particularly impressive but they are above average, and I'm not sure if it matters but they have been improving quite significantly each semester.

Considering that at this point I haven't been exposed to many areas of law (and anyway, what we learn in school is pretty different from what it's like in practice), I'm pretty open to most areas, though my gut feel tells me that criminal law is prob not my thing. Other than that, hoping to get some guidance as to which areas of laws in/and which firms would be good to try to get an internship at. I understand that "good" is relative, but generally I guess I mean good reputation (not just for internships but just in general, good prospects, firm is known to be a good one lah), good working culture (not toxic etc), and ideally an internship that would serve as a good stepping stone (be it to help me better identify what&where i'd like to work in in the future / good on CV / etc etc)

Would appreciate any advice at all. As a law student I don't know much about how its reaaally like in practice, eg. things that only those who are going/have gone through it would know, so am open to hearing anything just to get a better idea

Anyone got any info?

I think lawyers' salaries have stagnated in the last ten or so years across the board from Chinatown types to Big 4. May I suggest joining the civil service via the admin service route would probably guarantee a salary that keeps pace with inflation over the years. Otherwise become a politician.

Sign up for any networking programmes /talks by lawyers etc that your school organises. You have to do the legwork on your own mate. You learn about the various areas of practice by talking to lawyers, trawling firms' websites and what they say about their own departments/teams. Do at least one liti and one corp internship, and if you're completely clueless about what interests you, try to do an internship at a medium/big -sized firm so you can ask lawyers other than your assigned mentor for work and try to get a rough idea of what they do. If you need an idea of which firms are reputable or prestigious, go look at the chambers/legal 500 rankings by yourself. Come on man, it's not that difficult...

If I'm 2PQE and I switch to being legal counsel for some time (say a year), how hard is it to move back to practice? I've seen multiple Linkedin profiles where people moved back to law firms but just wondering whether this is generally achievable without connections (assuming that one actually performed well as a lawyer and wasn't asked to leave).

Thanks!
