To the person who say sales> products, why do you say this haha? both are incredibly different roles, sales more upside if you are good, but i think the technical side of it will be missed out..

Better money and can always direct client queries to the products and PMs woohoo!

Currently working in the industry and have been working with people in this programme. Essentially, this is a programme that train you to be an investors relations and client servicing type of role. You respond to enquiries about the products assigned under you. It is more technical than a purely institutional sales role but there is probably no sales kpi. Pay wise not sure products or sales higher. But if you are interested in being an investment role, product role is probably not what you want to do.

hey thanks for ur reply. so if i want to keep options open, would you recommend i take a more investment centric role at a lower tier bank (eg nomura/bnp/maybank) instead of IPFS at wellington? But only if I'm interested in IR, then the wellington IPFS would be more suitable?
what prospects are there for product specialists in AMs in Singapore though? Is it rather stagnant and limited once near the top? hmmm..

What kind of investment centric role do you mean? And Maybank is probably different tier compared to bnp abd nomura.
My guess is product specialist can still take on roles like fund analyst, product solutions or discretionary portfolio management roles in private banks. Maybe even ARM roles in private banks. I would think that it is possible to go from product roles to sales role too if you are keen eventually.

thanks. yeah im not too worried about the movement from product specialist to arm/sales, seems quite doable. but then the movement other way to more investment heavy side is the concern. However, since you mention about doing DPM at private bank being a possible route, seems quite promising! do you see it happening often in sg?
also by investment centric, i mean the portfolio mgmt kind of roles but for these banks its kinda geared towards smaller institutions/hnwi.

I am not too sure if it happens often. The thing is, DPM is still not a very technical role. Similar to other relationship type of finance roles, it is more of who you know rather than what you know that determines whether you get the job.
So you mean asset management buyside roles from the banks? If yes, then of cos it is more relevant to investment jobs

could i ask why you say that DPM is not very technical? I am concerned about that haha. my understanding was that it would be like fund allocation but not really a fundamental bottom up type of role, but still quite technical as need to strategize the clients portfolio to achieve their investment goals>?

In DPM your clients are HNW aka more atas retail clients that are mostly unsophisticated and have minimal understanding of finance. They are main risk averse and the objective is mostly to preserve wealth than to make money. Even if you smoke them they also dk
In a real buy side jobs your clients are mostly asset owner, mostly institutional. They will have an in house allocation team that are well educated and sophsiticated and the expectations will be much higher.

The transition to sales is not easy as you think. Your networth is your value no matter where you are from or even any industry you are from. Do you even know the guys at GIC, Temasek, etc to make the transition?
