But I feel it is not full guarantee.

I did try a few times, some did land me interviews but unfortunately I did not manage to pass. There was once where I didn't get an interview at all even with referral.

A referral will only help you stand out from the 5000 other applicants in the job portal but it's only half the battle won. It's still better than a less than 2% chance as compared to sending it via a website

What are some of the things you've tried when preparing for the interview?

guanxi, referrals, all those are bullcrap.

so many people, i dare say more than 30% in my organisation are hired through these channels and NONE of them can perform.

just do what you do best, people will headhunt you.

no need for what 'hacks'. there is no secret to success

Current obstacle? Discriminatory hiring on race.

Local U grad, mid-career with reasonable length and depth of experience in my industry, spruced up my resume etc but have not received any responses to job applications.

Only factor left is my brown malay skin. At least 95% of HR are female Chinese, and I suppose I should not fault them for having to choose (especially with a deluge of covid candidates), between someone of the same skin colour or the lazy malay.

perhaps it is why referral was used to get in, and it shows that referrals are helpful in getting through the door. Probably less stricter expectations for these candidates

Context : If you read a really good food review, you're wanting to try it because everyone has been posting it on Instagram. However, you would still need to try it, love it and want to buy more for your family

Same for referrals - it's only the a direct introduction, you would still need to work on your personal brand, prep for interviews, ace the interviews, negotiate the right salary and do well in your role to move up!

Unhappy

I have so many problems I don't really know where to start

First of all I have a lot of chronic conditions, both mental and physical

I'm also socially awkward, and last of all I've been fired for incompetence before

How?

I wish I could solve all your problems, but I'm only trying to do a little by trying to add some value! Sorry man! Also, is there a way to edit the title - I have no idea why I came up with 'hacks' when in reality the intention was to try to add alittle value to people who might be feeling stuck.

You can seek medical treatment for your mental and physical conditions. Just be happier. It's all in your mind. Stop thinking negatively as can be seen from all your posts, stop feeling sorry for yourself cos it does not help your situation. And work harder and don't be lazy at work so you won't be fired for incompetence.

If "just be happier" worked then there wouldn't be a mental disease called depression

Anyway I'm already seeking treatment, but the road to recovery is long
