Default Job Search hacks

Hi All! Quick introduction, I've been in the talent management field for the past 10 years in SEA. Having been a key decision maker in the hiring process at both corporates and startup businesses, I do have a good idea of what companies look for in candidates. With COVID and finding a new role being more competitve :

I'm curious to hear, what are some of your obstacles/stuck points in your current or potential job searches?

It would really depend where you're stuck at and i can help provide some advice. Did you know only 1.6% get hired if you send your CV via the online portals? That should give you a clue!

Whats an exHR doing here doing probono work? If you really at altruistic, post your linkedin so I will directly reach you there.

How do I get the contacts for the HR person who are filtering candidates, how do I search for the hiring manager. Do I really have to connect with them on linkedin? But their profile seems dead and doesnt have much information other than their role there. So what is with this advice going around that one has to reach out to the HR and Hiring Managers on linedkin or email. Do they have time to entertain this?

How to get a referral? I add a stranger in linkedin whose currently in that position and ask them if they can refer me?

As a fresh graduate, what kind of network are you expecting of me.

As a fresh graduate, what kind of 2-3 years of working experience are you expecting of me?

Why jobs always sound so fancy and ties a lot of responsibility but when you are into the actual job, you do mostly grunt work. Even if you in some management associate programme. So whats with the relevant experience again? It doesnt work for me coz I dont do self-filtering.

Cover letter, short or long? Do people bother reading.

I know HR post the job ad, they receive immediate candidates, so its really about how fast and how your resume stand out right? This is my experience so far.

Usually you need direct relationship/referral from someone close to the boss. In China they call it guanxi. You don't have guanxis if you are introverted and hate party or hanging out in bars. So have to apply from jobstreet.

Perhaps it's different in China but in my experience, you can also network on platforms like Linkedin. But of course if someone you don't know just keeps reaching out to your with his/her CV to help her put a referral also very sian right.

What I've tried is, make a bucket list and know the role that you want and reach out to people in that area in the company to learn more about their challenges, what they enjoy in their role etc and find out what their challenges might be. You need to offer them something to help you with a referral too. It's not a fast solution but it's the longer way in to get a referral when you don't know anyone in a company. Hope that helps!

Referrals are very useful and can give some advantage over other candidates
