I am rich compared to my relatives in Malaysia and Thailand. I own a beautifully renovated 4 room HDB flat which is worth S$500k. I have no loans as I cleared my mortgage and my car loan. At 40, I now have savings of S$200k and CPF S$100k. I bought a condo in Thailand which I will retire in when I reach 50 years old. I will sell my flat and will live like a rich tycoon in Thailand. My net worth today is so much at S$1.2m. My relatives net worth in Malaysia is only S$200k and in Thailand only S$100k. When I visit them, I am like a celebrity.

You rightly pointed out that financial wealth is all relative - that is, how you compare with your relatives. Haha.

Unfortunately we are not living in a pond, we are living in an ocean. In a pond, you may be like celebrity to your relatives, but in the ocean, your current net worth placed you as a very small fry.

But not to spoil your happy feeling, just remember not to compare yourselves with some whales boasting here in this forum.

I'm blessed to have relatives and friends who are lesser than me. I don't bother to befriend those who are richer than me as that will trap me into a world of comparisons. I always believe in looking at those who have less than me rather than those who have more. If you have friends who live in big penthouses or bungalows, you will feel miserable. If you have friends living in HDB flats, you feel normal and when I visit my relatives in Malaysia and Thailand, I feel great! When you help the poor and destitute, you feel even blessed. The guy who complains about not having shoes will feel contented when he sees another guy without legs.

Btw, even the whales here are small little fries compared to the billionaires of the world.

It kind of depends on what you want to gain by knowing people who are better off then yourself, I have close friends who are much wealthier then I am but they are generous with their stuff but more importantly have a wealth of knowledge from their businesses to share and I am really fortunate to have such friends. I don't feel belittled by them or their wealth because they earned it and are willing to share their knowledge and know how in which I may benefit.

In a direct contrast I have an ex colleague who makes decent money and likes to be somewhat showy (fast cars, fancy eats etc), he choose to hang around people who like to envy up to him. When we meet up he sneers at me buying property and performing wealth building (property advise from my other group of friends) because he said I should not pamper my kids and just spend for the moment because that's what life's all about)

I am not saying you are him but if you have friends who are better off than yourself but belittle you its obviously not a group you want to hang around with. People who are better than ourselves are usually good and passionate about what they do and they're knowledge and advice are usually worth listening too.

Personally I don't make my wealth to catch up with the next guy, I just wanna have enough to self sustain my lifestyle and not have to do my 9am to 9pm (or 11pm) anymore.

You should just quit now. Why wait any longer? Sell your HDB flat and migrate to a 3rd world country where you will be among the rich. You can devote the rest of your life to feeding and helping the poor. Your soul will be much more enriched compared to chasing after this material world. Seek the truth and find true success in this life and hereafter.

Type in YouTube "Success in this life and the hereafter" to find out about true success.

51, multi millionaire, retired. Owns a portfolio of spanking brand new condos, fully paid up. All near to MRT stations. No debt.

Spend most of my time building up my muscles in the condo gym and swimming pool.
Hope to climb Mount Everest one day.

So why do you still feel poor? Is there an aspect of life that is not turning out well for you despite having 100 million ?

What's my net worth? Financially, not much. I just own a humble abode, a 20 years old 4 room HDB flat, a small car, some savings and CPF. I think in total my total net worth, including my flat, is only about $600k. But my true worth is my character and personality. I am a well respected member of my clan. I lead my community with solid advice. I ensure our youngster grow up to be good citizens with strong moral characters, who do not engage in immoral activities such as womanizing. I thought them to respect their family especially their parents and wife. Even though I not some wealthy bosses, I am very much looked up to my neighbors, family and friends. I am not morally corrupted unlike those wealthy bosses who have many mistresses and they engage in immoral activities.
