probably one of the most if not only truthful disclosure of salary! good on you and woe on those who put in incredulous figures just to make other feel bad when they themselves are not paid well.

Most of you are earning such high income, incl those with just a miserly few yrs of working experience. Shd count your blessings coz majority of singaporeans can get (or still struggling hard at getting) pass a pathetic $40k annum after many yrs of slogging.

This thread is for benchmarking i presume. Not to complain about miserable pay, whatsoever.
If u think ur annual package sucks, then look for another job. Not sit around n whine. Complain when othera earn more, or worst, post some comments in disbelief.

I don't know how much lawyers earn but I'm sure they earn way more than just "slightly above average". I have a lawyer client (late thirties) who bought a condo with $2M cash. this is after losing more than $800k in a business venture. if u mean average as in about $5k monthly, average earners can hardly afford that.

And I think nowadays average families can afford cars and holidays

There's quite a big range. A 30-year-old male lawyer (or a 28-year-old female) would draw more than $8,000 in one of the big four firms. In an offshore firm, the same lawyer would be drawing close to or more than $10,000 depending on the firm and where he is based. In the medium-sized firms, they will be drawing between $7,000 to $8,000 and of course, the remainder working in even smaller firms will draw less than that but still easily above $5,000. By extrapolation, the average male lawyer should be earning about $7,000 at 30 (28 for a female).

I don't know enough 35-year-old lawyers to comment on their average pay.

do most lawyers get to make partner, as long as they stay in law long enough?

Junior partner yes, but not equity partner. You only need to stay six to eight years for the firm to make you a junior partner, but it can be a decade or never for equity partner. If you are not bringing in business, the firm has no incentive to give you a share of the profits.

But I should add that even for junior partner, it's a big IF whether you stay long enough. The attrition rate is over 50% three years post-call, and beyond five years, close to 80%. Some will leave the profession completely, many will move in-house, and others will join the legal service.

started as mgmt trainee in a foreign bank at 3.4k base, stayed and promoted for 2 years. leaving salary was 4.3k and bonus around 5-6months.

went to grad school in US, then worked for BB in nyc. sign on was 50k USD, base was 95k USD and bonus was crap cos of Lehman crisis. leaving salary was 115k USD and bonus of 75k

returned to singapore 2 years ago with offer of 110k sgd base plus guranteed bonus of at least 90k. promoted twice in 2 years to reach current salary
