For reals?? $4000 to $4500 is like what a lower mid tier firm pays for first year associate. Many small outfits (under 15 lawyers) pay about $4500 or more.

Mid sized should be between $5000 to $5500 excluding bonus. Few mid sized firms practice frontloading

Wow, that much? Then I wonder what's the incentive to work at big firms if mid sized kinda match their pay (apart from prestige and career progression). After all, the hours at big firms could be longer due to the sheer volume of work? I'm saying this from a neutral point of view.

Having a big firm's name on your cv always help. Well prestige do matter right, that is why we are lawyers in the first place? If we are in this only for the money, then probably we wouldnt have joined law. If we are in this only for justice, then this page wouldnt exist. Of course, you are kinda right. from short term point of view dollars/hr at mid size firm is marginally better.

SLB seems to be doing well. I know retention isn't good at Khattar and TRC. Within the mid sized firms there are 'tiers' as well. Each has its own strengths though.
