B4 is really sad. Junior partners starting salary is 17k.

Whereas International Firms 1st year assoc starts at 14k-24k (depends whether MC or Mid Atlantic or NY rates)

Kennedys has increased rates for newly qualified (NQ) associates in London by a whopping 60%, from £50,000 to £80,000.

The Legal Cheek Firms Most List 2023 shows the major money move puts its new lawyers on a pay par with their rivals at Charles Russell Speechlys, Clyde & Co and Trowers & Hamlins. Salaries in the regions are up 32% to £50,000.
-------------------------
It's extremely saddening to see that even a 5th tier firm like Kennedys has increased their NQ pay to £80K (nearly SGD 11k per month) while Singapore's biggest, most elite and most prestigious local law firms i.e. the Big 4, are still paying NQs and Junior Assocs salaries that are barely living wage.

Don't forget the higher cost of living and tax. On £80k per year, you'd be paying an effective income tax of about 30% in the UK, so you would only take home about £56k per year.

£56k ~ S$90k per year - around S$7.5k per month, which is exactly what B4 pays. And after rent, utilities, and other payments, you'd be taking home far less than this.

Purely on financial terms, and assuming you live at home and don't pay rent in SG, you would have to be on the UK scale MC / US salary for it to be economically viable to work in the UK.

Example: CC pays their UK NQs £125k. After tax, you're taking home £80k - about £6.7k per month. Assuming rent, utilities, and other payments are around £2.5k per month, your net income per month would be £4.2k or ~S$6.7k. That's a little less than B4 after Singapore tax.

Again, assuming you live at home and don't pay for rent in SG, up to a certain point you would actually make more in net pay as a B4 NQ in SG than working in London on the UK.

But of course, this is purely on financial terms - it doesn't include how your MC/US salary would scale over time (definitely better than B4), bonuses, and the many other opportunities that working in London at a top-tier firm would bring. Just food for thought

One firm provides their associates with fish tanks whereas another uses a hot desk system. Surely you can tell which one is more appealing to young professionals who are constantly being told they are the best of their cohorts
